Summary
The memories of Wen Xiao oh so gently holding one of her hands between both of her own—smooth, slender fingers against rough, assassin made ones—flood, suddenly, through her mind. How the word “dawn” had been ghosted there, how she mourned that it had faded—washed fully off, the motifs gone but the fluttering feeling they had brought lingering large. How, as she laid on that forest floor, it dawned on her that she wanted more, how during a rare moment of mothering rather than smothering those desires, she, greedily, wished for it.
“You wished for Wen-daren to hold your hand and to mean it,” the being finishes, as if reading her mind, same as she, seemingly, had done that day.
Pei Sijing has a wish. A demon who has long been holding a grudge against the order of Bai Ze is all too glad to grant it.

Summary
And for the doubt still lingers, as if it has grown a home inside his body and resides now among the hordes of bones and blood, Lan Wangji adds, belatedly, but with fearful agog, “Unless you do not wish for me to stay.” The other man's mouth widens and shuts, seemingly struggling to answer, the finality of it weighing large. Lan Wangji waits, as he always does.

Summary
Jiang Wanyin finds that he wants to laugh—a dry, mirthless laugh, but a laugh all the same—at the shared ordeal of he and Lan Wangji: two single, what still feels to be barely adult men, left to raise boys not their own. And as with most of his life’s misfortunes, his brother, not to his astonishment, is to blame.
