Eight-year old Abigail Katherine Guillotin knows her mother is powerful. She knows that her mother can be mean to other people, and she doesn't like strangers.

“Kuki Hiroshi.” She looks at Ei out of the corner of her eye. “You know the name?”
“Shinobu’s brother,” Ei murmurs, more to herself than anyone.
“The same.”
Ei takes a slow breath. Shinobu—razor-sharp, unflinching Shinobu. It’s hard to imagine her shaken by anything. But the look on Miko’s face tells her this isn’t going to be a clean case.
Raiden Ei is a detective. With the help of Yae Miko and Kuki Shinobu, she begins to piece together the story behind the sudden and unexpected death of Kuki Hiroshi. What she discovers forces her to acknowledge her own past grief and relationships, particularly when the case starts to look eerily similar to the death of Raiden Makoto years ago. And that maybe neither of these cases should have been ruled as accidents at all.

what a roller coaster. This fic genuinely evoked feelings that I never expected to feel reading a sandbina fic but here I am. It felt like a 12 episode show that pulls at your heartstrings but starts off innocuous, and I absolutely loved every bit of it.
This is one of the fics that I wish I could reread for the first time, a hundred times. I wish I could relive in this FICTION world that the author MADE UP because the story is just so convincingly immersive somehow. I rarely feel that sense of grief after finishing a story - the realization that my best friends, my most connected other humans, are actually just fictional characters from a fictional world, and this is the extent of it. And that means that's all I get from this fictional world. And that's what makes me grieve. It's like losing my best friends, and all that remains of them are the memories of what they've already done.
I will be rereading this multiple times in the future. One of the best fics in this entire tag. Genuine sleeper fic.

Columbina knows the monastery by the number of steps, the cold stone beneath her palm, and the order in which every wall has its place. Sandrone is used to trusting only what can be measured, verified, and taken apart.
Their first meeting happens by an old monastery wall. Strong enough to keep them apart, weathered enough to let a voice pass through.
In Nod-Krai, where moonlight is held as a measure, even the quietest conversation can unsettle the order of things.

an introspective and thought-provoking work, beautifully written. Columbina is an absolute gem. The way the author presents her is perfect; she is intelligent and critical but clearly understands that her limited information highly affects her bias, and it makes her hesitate in her conclusions. And the subtle ways that Sandrone is actually kind and patient despite her hard words, like how she listens through all of Columbina's answers even if she doesn't find them satisfactory. PERFECT CHARACTERIZATIONS. I am absolutely devouring this world-building. Genuinely could read an entire trilogy of this stuff in one sitting.
