It’s a mystery even to himself how he remembers the expression Cyno always made when they battled eight years ago, but chalks it off to the many recordings of the Champion he has seen along the years. Cyno is, technically, a celebrity; it’s impossible not to see his face plastered everywhere whenever Alhaitham is in town.
In a way, Cyno’s fame was the one reason why he hadn’t forgotten his childhood rival’s face, even though they had still been kids the last time they saw each other.
Eight years ago, Alhaitham and Cyno had been neighbors and rivals, but that no longer has anything to do with Alhaitham. It was supposed to stay that way, until the Sages decide to return and Alhaitham is called in to assist the Sumeru Champion in investigating the matter.

Kaeya laughed and whisked himself through the door. He deliberately stood in the hallway, as if debating following Albedo to his lab. Jean huffed and he laughed again, turning his feet with some effort to the exit.
He just had to keep going. Exist today. And tomorrow. And the day after.
It was harder now, only because he had no idea what he existed for. He couldn’t exactly gather information to send it nowhere, could he? What was he doing now? Who was he meant to be? What about all the work he’d already done?
He managed to get to the door before he turned around. The curiosity was killing him, like acid in his veins. He needed to know. He needed to know about this Albedo man.
/Please, Rhine, I’m begging you. If you do this, I’ll do whatever you and Father want. I’ll go, I’ll fuck and kill and burn my way through that country, I don’t care./
The words felt like yesterday. They felt like a lifetime ago. The cold of tears on his face made him so cold he had to check and see if they were actually there. His cheeks were dry, but his throat ached.

“An accident doing what?” Albedo scoffed. “You haven’t had a mark on you since you became my guard. Since when do you get an eye taken out?”
“It only takes one lucky swing, Prince,” Kaeya sighed and stretched his arms wide. “One lucky swing and one idiot knight not paying attention.”
Albedo frowned. Too many questions still presented themselves. How had the wound been healed so quickly? Kaeya hadn’t been in the hospital. How was it covered so quickly with an eyepatch? Why weren’t there bandages and salves and treatment plans? Why wasn’t he replaced immediately with someone who hadn’t just had their eye sliced open?
No. He didn’t believe Kaeya for a minute, but when Kaeya didn’t want to reveal a secret, there was no line of questioning that could trick him into it. Albedo had tried often enough.
