Brendan shrugs, strums a strange discordant chord. “It’s Anthony.” It sounds like a cop-out, a non-answer entirely, really, but it’s all he has to say. It’s Anthony and it’s me and it’s me and Anthony. He adjusts his fingers on the frets to resolve the chord and plays it a couple times, ear turned to the strings. “We’re just doing what makes sense.”

“Here,” Anthony pulls a cigarette out of the carton and hands it to Frank, who accepts it gladly, then takes another one out for himself, “for your troubles.” He lights Frank’s before his own, feeling Frank’s eyes on him as he breathes in, watches the cherry glow to life, still silent. Trying to find the words. They’re both leaning against the cool metal of the bus, but Frank’s turned towards him, hips canted forward. It’s fucking maddening.
“So, what’s up, then?” Frank finally asks. “Not gonna ditch you now, ‘cause you let me bum a cig off of you and it’d be an asshole move of me to just leave right after, but, um.” He gestures loosely with his cigarette hand. “What can I do for you?”
Anthony exhales slowly, tracks the curl of smoke into the air until it dissipates, then mumbles, “I’m gonna tell you something really fucking crazy and you’re just gonna have to believe me.”
(Anthony falls asleep in 2024 next to the love of his life, and wakes up in a world that might as well have been a lifetime ago. The situation is less than ideal.)

Anthony had told himself on the drive over that he wouldn’t jump Frank the moment he showed up, would say hi to the dogs first, ask about J and the kids, but now that he’s here and Frank’s in front of him in the flesh again, looking a little frazzled but fucking angelic, his brows drawn up and together in that sweet way of his—he just can’t help himself.
“Hey, you,” Frank starts, and then Anthony’s grabbing him by the face and reeling him in for a kiss.

It’s like everything in the world is brand shining new, with one grand sweep of Anthony’s giddy hand.
