“How are you here?”
“Uhm… the train… How are you here?” He’s speaking to Tsukishima like he’s stupid; Tsukishima can feel a headache brewing already.
“Why are you here?”
“Same as you, I’m guessin’? I’m working here over the summer.” Which is really just great. Super, in fact. It means they’ll be co-workers the entire summer long.

Summary
Upon reflection Kuroo realises this has been a bad idea. Perhaps his worst one to date. Sure, on his phone screen a few days ago the short message asking him if he wanted to join Sawamura at the beach this weekend had seemed like the very best of ideas; the characters blinking up at him from his phone so surprising he’d rang Sawamura on instinct to check if they were real and that he hadn’t willed them there in a fit of delusion.
Sawamura, his voice soft and his laughter softer, had confirmed it. He really was inviting Kuroo on a weekend beach trip.

“Yeah?” Saeko tips her head at an angle, face so fond it’s embarrassing. “You going to fall in love and all that too?” Tanaka feels his face flush.
“I don’t know!” He crams more cereal into his mouth and crunches it loudly in an attempt to drown out her cackle. A lot of people fall in love with their soulmates. Not everyone. But it’s the dream, isn’t it? To find your person, to find your name on them too, and to fall in love. Tanaka’s only nine, so he’s not sure he cares about the love part entirely. It would be nice, maybe. He wrinkles his nose. “But they’ll definitely be my best friend!”

Before Yamamoto ever meets Ennoshita he already knows the four most important things about him:
One: he lives in the same road as Nishinoya.
Two: his height is exactly halfway between Tanaka and Nishinoya’s.
Three: his favourite flavour ice cream is vanilla.
And four: he is the bravest person Tanaka and Nishinoya have ever met.At least those are the things Tanaka and Nishinoya insist are the most important things about him.
If it weren’t for number four Yamamoto would find this Ennoshita person boring.

Nothing good ever comes from Tanaka being bored. Everybody knows this. Of course Tanaka would argue that only good things come from him being bored; it’s simply a matter of perspective. Right now Noya’s ‘perspective’ places him firmly with everybody: this is bad.

“Are humans real?” Kuroo halts mid-air, turning to look at Kenma with wide eyes.
“Why would you ask me that?” He doesn’t sound angry so much as confused. Maybe a little hurt. Probably a lot hurt and he’s just masking it for Kenma’s sake.
“I just,” Kenma fidgets, shuffling his head so that his hair falls back in front of his face, “you’re the smartest person I know and I need to know.”
“But–”
“Kuroo.” He might have managed to convince Bokuto, Oikawa, and even Sugawara that he must have been mistaken after the uproar last summer, but Kenma remains mostly unconvinced. Kuroo is his best friend, his oldest friend; Kenma knows him. A practical joke, he’d told them, voice strangely tight, but Kuroo wouldn’t joke about something like that. “It’s me.” Kenma chances a glance upwards heart constricting at the pained look on Kuroo’s face. “You can tell me.” Kuroo floats down, feet landing softly on the floor.
“Yeah,” he mumbles and Kenma’s heart soars, “they’re real.”

It isn’t a habit so much as a two or three time accidental occurrence. Surely something only becomes a habit after it’s happened a dozen times? Maybe even more! And this is definitely only the fourth time Tanaka’s thought about doing it since the last time he actually did it. If he follows through with it then it would be the fourth time. And isn’t there a rule that says you have to follow-through with the fourth thought if it would make it the fourth time? Tanaka sighs, it can’t be helped; it’s not like he makes the rules.
