Summary
Nicolo Genova, or Nicky to his American friends, is just trying to get through his PhD program. He's writing his dissertation on Post-classical homoerotic poetry, but he cannot find anyone who speaks an extinct dialect of Arabic so he can translate a famed love poem by a little known poet, al-Kaysani.
Strangely enough, his friend knows a professor on campus who can translate the poem. What starts as a simple request for assistance on his dissertation blossoms into something that Nicky -- shy, reserved Nicky who abandoned his plans for the priesthood months before ordination -- had never imagined for himself: true love.
What he doesn't know is that Dr. Joseph Jones (his handsome, erudite, kind, lovely Joe) is harboring a secret too large for anyone to believe -- and that secret might just cost them everything.

Summary
Nicolò looks sheepish. "I killed you yesterday, and you awoke at the same time, the same place. But when I die, I wake at different times, different places. This bolt," he tosses it to Yusuf and it lands in the dirt by his knee, "it killed me yesterday, but I woke up many years from now. I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

Summary
“A fine justification. I’ve heard it so many times before” were the words Nicky spoke, and they were words he had heard so many times. From Kings claiming that the world would be better if they ruled to murders justifying the mass slaughter of people, evil will use the concept of the greater good as justification for their own horrific actions. While The Old Guard had seen that play out throughout history, this wasn't even the first time someone justified hurting them in the name of the greater good.
