Через несколько месяцев после событий в храме Гуаньинь Вэй Усянь и Лань Ванцзи отправляются на не совсем обычную ночную охоту: Погребальные Холмы наступают, быстро и безо всяких видимых причин. Вэй Усянь чувствует, как в ответ на эти события что-то старое, казалось, давно похороненное, всколыхнулось внутри него, поднимаясь на поверхность.

Wei Wuxian would have thought that the dragon’s voice would rattle the trees, shake the earth with its force. Instead, his voice is small and a little raspy. He speaks slowly, as if it is difficult to speak at all.
“I accept....your offer,” he says painfully. “You know....the price? No leaving...until this season comes again...do you understand?”
Wei Wuxian doesn’t feel fully in his body as he nods. “Yes.”

Increasingly desperate, Wei Wuxian turns to unconventional means to help the Wens. If one can call trading away a year of his life to live in a secluded estate with a mountain spirit 'unconventional'. Or, the 'east of the sun, west of the moon' one.

"Ooh, this is fascinating." Wei Wuxian lifts his hand and—Heavens help him—Lan Wangji's hand follows. Because they're stuck. They're stuck. Their fingers are interlaced, and they can't pull them apart. "You know, I wasn't expecting this, but isn't it odd? It's obviously a curse, but so far, it's not harmful."
Oh, it is harmful, Lan Wangji thinks through a spinning head as he feels Wei Wuxian twist their hands this way and that, testing the limits of the curse. It is most certainly harmful.

A curse brings Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji together—literally.
(tl;dr a curse makes teen!wwx and teen!lwj hold hands. lwj, who is very much in denial about his feelings, tries his best not to panic and wwx decides that Operation: Make Lan Zhan My Best Friend is a GO. hilarity ensues)
