Summary
He extends an outstretched hand and Lu Guang peers down curiously to see what he’s holding.
It’s an old photograph, crinkled around the edges.
Two boys, teenagers, still soft around the edges— one laughing so hard his eyes are a hazy blur and the other watching him, entranced by what he finds there, on his friend’s face.
It makes fondness so big well up inside Lu Guang’s heart that he’s scared it will spill right out onto the floor, all over them. Because if you think about it, really, the heart is just a box— there’s only so much one can feel in the moment. There’s a limit on how much it can hold, how much it can carry.
People always say to think outside the box. Lu Guang says no thank you to that; he’s perfectly content sitting inside this little box housed beneath his ribs. Because it gives, where the mind refuses. It remembers, when memory fails him.

One night, Lu Guang dreams of the fire.
This time, he’s inside the house, tugging Xiaoshi out to the open. Anywhere, he thinks, far away from this heat. From the greedy flames that take it all and leave nothing. Cheng Xiaoshi, ever the fool, pulls away.
“Our photos,” he shouts, over the embers. “Our memories, Lu Guang!’
“Leave them,” Lu Guang begs, even as he feels Xiaoshi slipping away. “We can make new ones. We have our whole lives ahead to make more!”
A burning house, and a foolish lover who walks straight to his death.
Memories make a man, Lu Guang, his teacher used to say. It’s what we keep living for.
Wrong, Lǎo Shī, he thinks helplessly, watching as the flames get harsher. His hand burns empty, when it had been so full just a moment ago. Memories do not make a man, they kill him.
Or Cheng Xiaoshi keeps dying, Lu Guang keeps going back.

“It’s bullshit, right?” Takemitchy blurts out suddenly, blue eyes wide and desperate even as he hitches up his shoulders with a gasp of pain. “It’s bullshit and impossible and I’m a liar. You don’t have to — I mean you won’t—”
“Shut up, Takemitchy,” Chifuyu says, rubbing a hand over his forehead. Takemitchy keeps looking at him like he’s waiting for Chifuyu to just up and leave, and he can’t stand it. “It’s fine. I mean, it’s not fine,” he adds when he gets an incredulous look, “and it sounds like bullshit, sure, but people who’re lying don’t sound like that. And… it may be hard to believe, but you aren’t.”
Or, Takemichi and Chifuyu discover the seven wonders of Shibuya, tend to each other's wounds, technically do not commit any crimes, and learn how to trust each other. Not necessarily in that order.

"All of Chifuyu’s stories are about being left, and all of Baji-san’s were about leaving. Leaving the city when he got older, leaving Japan to travel, leaving his mother’s house. Really, they should have known. Even now, grief is a circular staircase; at every turn, Chifuyu is afraid he’ll lose sight of him.
It’s okay, though. He could never be truly angry about Takemitchy over it. He’s had practice."
so, so gorgeously done- all the interactions between the Toman members, all their tiny habits and the characterisations are so beautifully written.
god, chifuyu & takemitchy. takemitchy and chifuyu. the portrayal of grief, of panic attacks, of all the little things that weren't shown in the manga, i will love this work forever
