Inej had had no plan when she ducked into the coffee shop. She had spotted Aart following her and thought only to get around more people in case he almost certainly started something. As she approached the door, she spied a man sitting near the door, apparently alone, with a textbook open in front of him, and made a split second decision to hope that he was a decent person and would help her out.
“Hi,” she said, dropping into the seat across from him. He looked up at her, eyes wide. “Sorry, pretend to be my boyfriend?”

The first job after Lucy’s abrupt departure, Lockwood calls Holly Luce twice without thinking and bites his tongue hard enough to bleed. Holly’s unfailingly polite about it, because Holly’s unfailingly polite about everything, but he can’t miss the way she flinches, or the way George refuses to look at either of them. He can taste his embarrassment on the backs of his teeth, bitter and coppery where it mingles with the blood from his tongue.
It's just an adjustment period, he tells himself. Sure, there’s an empty space at his right shoulder all night where he keeps looking for Lucy entirely on instinct, one he hasn’t the first idea how to go about correcting, or even if he wants to—but it’s the first night. It’s to be expected. He thinks: It’ll get better.
But really, it just gets worse.

Kaz squints at her. “Are you a student, Inej?”
And, oh, no.
Her name sounds exactly right in his rock salt rasp. It spells trouble. She shakes it off and tries to focus on answering the question. She supposes that in a different world she could be a student. She would live in a cozy apartment with some other girls, and this would just be a part-time job, so she would have time to attend lectures and write papers and go on dates.
But Inej does not live in that world. She lives in this one.

Folk would say that the very cobblestones shivered in recognition, that the water in the canals stirred and wicked men in the Barrel and on the Exchange raised their heads in unease, sensing the change in the air.
