There, standing somewhat awkwardly on the WIPE YER PAWS! welcome mat that James still thought was hilarious, stood Harry’s yearmate Tom Riddle.
Tom had always been a little standoffish, a little slow to warm up compared to even his fellow Slytherins, and a lot averse to anything he even suspected might be ‘charity’. If he’d overcome all that to show up anyway, it meant that he really did want to take a chance on a friendship between them. “I’m really happy you’re here,” he said warmly. “Don’t worry, you haven’t missed much—the party’s still in full swing, we haven’t even done the cake or gifts yet!”
“Party?” Tom coughed, suddenly very interested in staring intently at anything but Harry. “I don’t know what you mean.”
As the seventh month dies, Tom Riddle pays a visit to Harry’s home in Godric’s Hollow to deliver what is very much not a birthday present, just so everyone’s clear on that.
