Summary
He doesn’t see them often, but he’s been better about having semi-regular phone calls with Mom and Dad, a way for them to bridge the gap that’s been growing between them for years now. Surely, during one of those calls, he would’ve clarified his status with Zo and made it clear that they were very much more than friends.
Except, thinking back on it now, he can’t think of a single time he’s ever brought it up with them. Even though they’ve been calling fairly regularly, the conversations have usually been constrained to simple “how’s school going?” and “any idea when you’ll visit next?” conversations. They’re surface-layer at best, and the few times they’ve tried to talk about anything more interesting—Joke’s music, his siblings, his relationships—they’ve been torn away by other commitments before they could dig even a little deeper.
“Oh my god,” Joke mutters as the realization dawns on him. “I never told them.”

Or: Joke kinda forgets to tell his family that Zo’s his boyfriend, not just his friend. This culminates in what will go down as one of the most weirdest days in Joke’s life.

“I should really just get LASIK at this point."
Joke freezes mid-bite, the gears in his head chugging as he processes Zo's words, his light but thoughtful tone, as though this is something he's really considering.
"It'd be so much less annoying—"
“No,” Joke blurts out before he can stop himself.
“Huh?”
For a moment, Joke can’t say anything, busying himself with planting more kisses on Zo’s neck, but he should know by now that Zo doesn’t let things go easily.
“Joke? What do you mean no?”
Zo’s tugging at his hair now, silently urging him to look at him, which Joke does with great reluctance. Steeling himself for Zo’s inevitable judgment, he musters up the most mopey, lovesick expression he can, barely managing to not crack when Zo just looks down at him with an eyebrow raised.
“I like you with glasses,” he whines, curling his arms around Zo’s torso and hugging him close. “You’re so cute like this.”
