Jesper says it must be blackmail. Maybe murder. There’s no other way Kaz Brekker could already be holding a full professorship at the University of Ketterdam, no matter how many books he’s written. Inej, trapped by an adjunct’s contract which is the only thing standing between her and deportation, is willing to risk the obvious dangers of his company in exchange for the advantages, professional and otherwise. But when the department’s budget comes up suspiciously short, Inej’s job is on the line, and Kaz isn’t ready to let her go without a fight.

“Your spy,” Inej said again. “And that’s it. Nothing else. Nothing… more?”
Brekker scoffed. “I’ve no use for a whore, I’m afraid. Not even the famous Lynx.”
“And I’ve no use for rude men,” Inej retorted. “Not even the notorious Dirtyhands.”
It was a stupid thing to say and Inej knew it. She absolutely did need him – he was practically dangling a whole new life right in front of her face, after all – but Saints, he was damnably irritating.

Summary
Kaz knocks on her door later that afternoon. She’s not sure how he knows which room is hers, and how he knows she’s in it. Inej lets him in and doesn’t pretend to be someone else: she allows him to see her dirty underwear on the floor, the twin empty gin bottles lying decrepit on her dresser, the dark smears on her table from when the ashtray had already overflowed and she’d needed to stub out the butts of her cigarettes.
She remembers the dozens of Styrofoam coffee cups in his room he’d had to move aside and she thinks he understands.

Summary
“There’s a difference between what you want and what you need.” He sipped from his cup and grimaced. After helping himself to a spoon of honey, he tried again. His eyes closed, and Inej thought he must be used to enjoying the simple things in life. The only things he would allow himself to enjoy. A good meal. A good night's rest. Warm clothes and a hot steaming cup of tea.
“What about what you want? What about what you need?” She pressed.
“You know what I want.” His eyes searched her face hungrily. For a moment forgetting they weren't alone.
“I need you to be happy, and for that, you have to go.”
Inej felt her heart break.
