There were certain things the members of the Will Rogers Football Team had come to expect. If they won a game, Darry would be the first one Paul congratulated. If Darry needed to throw the ball, Paul would be the first player he looked towards to see if he was open. If anyone mentioned that Darry had a varsity jacket he surely could not afford, Paul would be threatening them to shut up and making sure to get in an extra hit at their head during practice. And if Darry came to a party after one of their games, Paul would be going back to his own house with Darry rather than continuing to drink with the rest of his friends.
