Summary
Suddenly Paul feels self-conscious. Not about bein’ such good friends with Darry, no. Paul could never be insecure about that. What they have spent the last year buildin’ up means too much for Paul to taint in the name of appeasing the offhanded snide comments from strangers. Instead Paul feels like he ain’t good enough for Darry, like he deserves to be close with people who actually understand what it means to work nonstop to afford the life they live. Paul’s genuine attempts at empathy must be workin’ if Darry has bothered to stick around for this long, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s empathetic, not sympathetic. That ain’t ever gonna change.
Paul knows he has feelings for Darry, but he’s starting to realize that maybe Darry has feelings for him, too.

Summary
So here Paul finds himself again, standing on the front step of the Curtis family home. He knocks three times just like he always does, then shoves his hands deep in his pockets to stop ‘em from shakin’. Paul is never this nervous about coming over. What’s different about this time? Maybe it’s the fear of being judged—he can already feel the glare of all the Greasers practically breathin’ down his neck—or the fact that Paul’s brain is so miswired he fears he’ll accidentally slip up and say something incriminating to Darry. Something he ain’t ever gonna be able to take back. Something that’s going to change his life one way or another. For better or for worse.
Paul and Darrel share their first kiss.

“Cherry? What are you doing here? Is everything alright?” Soda asked, his voice gentle but tinged with worry.
Cherry forced a smile, her lips trembling as she looked at Sodapop. “Yeah, everything’s fine,” she said, her voice tight. “I just wanted to drop these off for you guys.” She held out the gifts, trying to keep her hands steady despite the cold and the swirling emotions in her chest.

Summary
Of course his nemesis draws. Of course his nemesis draws so much better than he can.
Stupid Soc boy Paul Holden.
His nemesis has a couple of loose attempts at what’s clearly his big brother’s face and stature — something even Ponyboy himself can’t pull off yet, but they look just like Darry. The sort of sunken-in set of his eyes, and the little half-smile he does when he’s real happy, the way his jaw has squared out the last year or so, a bit of darker shading on his chin to represent what he shaves off every morning next to Dad in the bathroom. There’s so much care put into how these sketches look, clearly, ‘cause they’re the softest drawings on the spread, gosh, they look like love, and it makes Pony subconsciously smile a little before he realizes what he’s doing.
or, pony learns paul draws and they bond over being geeky little artists together <3

Summary
Paul leaned his head back against the seat, looking up through the open roof at the stars. “I wanna get out too. Somewhere nobody knows me. Maybe an art school. Somewhere big enough that I can just disappear for a while.”
“Disappear?” Darry echoed, skeptical.
“Yeah,” Paul said. “Not forever. Just long enough to figure out who I am when no one’s lookin’.”
Darry was quiet for a second. The word disappear stuck with him – not because he didn’t understand it, but because he did, just not in the same way. Paul wanted to vanish to figure himself out. Darry had spent years trying to be seen at all.
—
Darry’s a greaser with too much responsibility. Paul’s a golden boy trying to disappear. They were never supposed to fit, but under Friday night lights and backseat stars, they find a version of each other that almost feels like home. Too bad nothing gold can stay.
