Summary
A suspicion slithers up Chris’s spine, whispers in his ear, tells him—not for the first time—that Josh is doing just fine without him. That the answer to the question Chris always asked himself—why Josh looked twice at someone like him—was simple proximity. It would explain their sporadic texts; even more sporadic phone calls; vague talk of video chats that never materialized. Chris has to admit he was surprised by Josh’s out-of-the-blue invitation to visit this weekend, but maybe it was just that: one of Josh’s spontaneous ideas, acted on before he remembered Chris wasn’t a stone’s throw away anymore.
Before he remembered he has other people to hang out with.
