Rebecca wants him to feel it all deeper than words; what she’s said to him today, and all the delicate wants that remain to be confessed. Dimly aware that the rain has resumed its thrashing down on this autumn night, her heart is on fire and his frame is warm and everything she’s ever wanted seems to exist here in this small kitchen above Paved Court.

Ted shrugs. “I do. It’s very comfortable.” He makes his point by wiggling, half his body draped over hers and his legs half hanging off the bed and it can’t be comfortable, really, but he looks so cheered to be there, regardless.
