Summary
Alice should let her go, should lay her back in the water, should speak the words that would ease the transition from this existence to whatever comes after, the words she's spoken a thousand times today alone, gentle lies about peace and rest and the ending of pain. It would be a kindness, really, the only kindness left to offer. The world has ended. The Heavenly Principles have fallen. The Four Shades are gone, scattered or dead or simply too exhausted to continue. There's nothing left to guide, no stars left to steer by, no order left to maintain.
What purpose could Kalidasa possibly serve now, except as another beautiful tragedy for Alice to witness and record and remember when everything else is dust?
But.
There's always a “but” with Fate, isn't there? Always an exception, always a moment where chaos decides to be contrary, where the threshold decides to hold instead of release.
An angel and her devastating god.

Summary
Nicole looks at Alice and thinks about shooting stars—how they burn brightest when they're falling, how you can't hold onto something moving that fast. That's what Alice had been from the beginning: all fire and forward momentum, brilliant and untouchable, the kind of person who leaves everyone else scrambling to keep up. Nicole had watched people try. Watched them reach for Alice like she was something that could be caught, something that could be held.
She won't be one of them.
The realization settles in her chest, bittersweet and certain. Nicole will never catch Alice, even if she tried. Maybe especially if she tried.

In another life, another turn of the world that isn’t this one, maybe Sandrone would have let herself fall entirely into Columbina’s arms without question. Maybe she would reach for Columbina’s face and hold her like she belonged there, and crash their lips together without thinking, without fear, allowing herself to unravel in a way no one else had ever been allowed to see—because Columbina had always been the one to touch the part of her that remembered all the love she had been given and taken across time, even when she herself could not.

…There’s that deep satisfaction of finally having made the right decision; the clear and unconditional promise of having something to protect. To cherish. To adore.
And it's safe to say that none of this should have happened to begin with. Furina should have never allowed her to be the one to open her up like that, the layered ivory hair and dark strands, those carmine crosses that seemed to make an appearance in every situation wherever she went. But maybe they were always meant to burn like this together, forever incandescent.
Or: Furina runs into Arlecchino again. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
