Summary
Time almost seems to pause as Jimmy takes in the scene—half a heartbeat, half an eternity.
Hips angled up, legs splayed apart from where he’s leaning his body weight on a bike rack, one hand gripping the steel frame and the other resting on the nape of another man’s neck. Jaw tilted skyward, Gary-fucking-Smith’s lips are splayed agape, pulling Derby Harrington in by his hair; smoke is blown into his open mouth, Gary pulling it into his lungs with a deep inhale.
Shotgunning a cigarette like a cute fucking couple, instead of a pair of sociopaths.
(months pass by, then years—jimmy feels haunted by gary. his ghosts come to life in college.)

Summary
"The girl," the homeowner blurts out. A placating edge to his voice that he's never quite perfected, considering the lack of social interaction in his adult life. "She's alive. Here."
The Vigilante straightens, sets his left foot back and aims the barrel of his rifle at the door. It's set right where the homeowner's chest would be, the target aimed with subconscious precision. Primal hunting instinct that the homeowner recognises from when his father would stalk deer—he instinctively steps backwards and bows his knees to flee, as useless as the motion is.
Fear sets in the homeowner's spine like fire to spilt gasoline.
"You open this fucking door right now."
(amidst the vigilante's lamenting, the homeowner throws him a bone: his niece is alive. distrust and violence unravel into something else.)
