"Oh, Eve—" Debbie seemed flustered, and drew her arm around herself, holding it against her slim stomach while the other still held the door. "No, he got," Debbie paused. "Called in to work."
"Well, shit." Eve looked crestfallen. Thick lashes dropping down to kiss her cheeks and then she turned her head away to stare down the street and out to the horizon. She lingered, chewing on her inner cheek.
"I'm sorry, Eve, I thought you'd be someone else." Debbie collected herself and cleared her throat. "Where are my manners? Why don't you come inside?"
