Summary
This is all Jackie’s fault. Van’s too, really. Actually this is mostly Van’s fault. If Van hadn’t dragged her out to that stupid party the night before, Nat would have gotten more than 45 minutes of sleep last night. Then, maybe she would have been awake and alert enough to secure Jackie as her partner for this stupid project. Of course though, because nothing can ever work out for Natalie, that didn’t happen. And now she’s stuck with Lottie fucking Matthews for the next eight weeks. God help her.

Summary
It’s nearly midnight, and they’ve been working in the living room for hours with no end in sight. Their third year of college has turned their bodies into machines fueled by caffeine, cheap ramen, and mutual academic guilt. It’s nearing midterms, so there’s barely time to breathe between assignments, readings, and shifts at the vintage store they both work at.
But Natalie doesn’t need those excuses to stay up this late. She has her own reason, one that Van tries to talk her out of again and again to no avail. She can’t give it up, though, no matter how much Van tries to reason with her or whatever look she gives her.
When the screen of her phone finally lights up, she doesn’t need to check the name. Nobody else ever calls her, especially not this late.

Summary
Wiskayok, Florida — summer of 1985. The heat settles like a curse, thick with longing, rot, and the kind of love that doesn’t end clean.
Lottie Matthews is the golden girl of a dying town, all sundresses and good manners, quietly unraveling in the back booth of Miller’s Diner. Natalie Scatorccio is the wrong kind of girl with a camo jacket and cigarettes, a switchblade in her pocket, and her daddy on death row.
They’ve been circling each other for years—between quarry bonfires, stolen beers, and the kind of confessions you only whisper with your knees touching under the table. But when a party turns violent and Lottie throws the first punch, everything starts to shift.
In a town that’s already written their stories for them, Lottie and Nat dare to dream of something different. Something dangerous. Something like love.

Summary
Lottie Matthews is soft and quiet, and yet lives just as she was born, screaming. A collage of perfectly pruned expectations, sliced off at the root, bound together with the barbed wire of the sickness in her skull. Malleable. Unpredictable. Breakable. A gentle breeze, never quite knowing if she’ll pass like a whisper or tear down the trees.
Natalie Scatorccio is hard and loud, and yet lives just as she was made, silenced. A shattered mirror of an angry man, devoid of expectations, ripped out at the root, torn apart by the sickness in her home. Avoidant. Destructive. Forgotten. A smoulder, never quite knowing if she exists to be stoked, or snuffed right out.
Spring Semester of Junior Year, Wiskayok High School: Breeze, meet Smoulder.
An inexplicable, inevitable connection. A hopeless, hurt group of misfits. A year and a half of high school. Hurting, healing, hating, loving, laughing, teasing, hoping, wanting, having, needing.

It starts with a harmless lie. A simple “We’re dating” to avoid nosy questions. But things start to spiral when Lottie's friends buy into it.
Natalie and Lottie get stuck pretending to be in a relationship, all while navigating their casual, no-strings-attached fling. As the pressure builds and the lines between fake and real blur, they’re forced to confront feelings neither saw coming.
