Summary
Danny Phantom died in a lab accident. This is fairly common knowledge, considering his attire, but Maddie didn't make the connection until she overheard him talking about it with some of the other ghosts. Then she notices how much he looks like Danny. How much he sounds like him. How similar their mannerisms are, and their habits, and their sense of humor.
Unfortunately, she still manages to come to some slightly wrong conclusions.

Summary
To everyone’s surprise, Phantom didn’t show up in the circle.
Instead, a very human and alive teenager popped up from the mist, his black hair messy and crunched up, like it’s been smashed down for hours now. He had a NASA themed pajama set and his eyes were groggy. He looked around, his eyes blinking dazedly at the people gawking at him, and, right before them, his blue eyes widened in alarm and he got onto his feet, his hands flying upwards to tug at his hair.
“Oh, crud.”
In a world where Danny and Sam don't know each other, Sam works at a store where people come to summon ghosts every once in a while. And sometimes, instead of Phantom, they end up summoning a normal teenager who's very much alive. It's not hard to put two and two together

Summary
Danny Fenton died during his accident. Everyone in Casper High knew that. Heck, everyone in Amity Park knew that. Because while withdrawn, quiet and solitary, Danny was still a Fenton, and the town knew of the famous ghost fanatics and their children. So, really, everyone knew Danny Fenton was dead.
Except for Danny Fenton, apparently.
