"A pity." Landa leaned back in his armchair, shifting his gaze to the fire. "I, for example, would choose Italy. Somewhere by the water, away from uniforms. Lago Maggiore. Silence. Wine you don't have to share with anyone except those you invite yourself." He smiled faintly. "They still don't know what a real winter is there."
When Hellstrom leaves the Warsaw Ghetto, his face betrays nothing. But something old and Prussian screams inside him-the ghost of his father, the oath, the uniform. He has to turn himself in. He should shoot himself. Instead, he gets on the train.
