A few weeks ago, some of the neighbourhood boys had found a dead cat in the empty lot where they usually played footie, stretched out between broken beer bottles and old bits of newspaper next to the bins. It had been back there for a while, and it was already half-rotted, with bits of fur still clinging and the eyes eaten out by flies. In that moment, sitting at her dining table, Mary felt as though someone had just stuck that dead cat inside her chest.

"Now, contrary to popular belief, Sirius quite liked Peter Pettigrew. He could be a bit annoying sometimes, but he was kind and funny and surprisingly good at talking himself out of detentions. Peter was an integral part of the Marauders, and he had jumped on board immediately when Sirius suggested they should become animagi. Sometimes James would give Sirius one of those looks that meant he needed to be nicer to Peter, but Sirius was never trying to be mean. He just joked around, and it wasn’t his fault that Peter could sometimes be a bit sensitive."

LONG fic charting the marauders' time at Hogwarts (and beyond) from Remus' PoV - diversion from canon in that Remus's father died and he was raised in a children's home, and is a bit rough around the edges. Otherwise canon-compliant.
