Summary
Privet Drive, Surrey was a perfectly normal and ordinary neighborhood. From the brown, perfectly spaced cookie cutter houses to the people, everything in the place was cut to be ordinary.
The Dursleys, surely, were no exception. Mrs. Petunia was tall and skinny, with a craning neck that was often used to spy jealously into the neighbors’ yards. Her husband, Vernon, was a heavyset man with a looming mustache and two dark, beady eyes that were obscured by his scraggly brown eyebrows. Their only son, or so they claimed, was a similarly built young middle schooler named Dudley. But something about this family marked them as different, no matter how they tried to hide it. There was a little boy, sometimes glimpsed in the window, always watching. Only his shadow in the house, the noise of a door’s slam, but never the full picture. The neighbors whispered, and gossiped, and talked, but none had brought it up for fear of breaking the illusory perfection. Maybe it had been a cousin, or even a delusion.
There was simply no way anyone in Privet Drive would be abnormal, after all.
