If there's one thing Jack likes to be, it's busy. Movement, noise, action; these are the essential ingredients that keep the hands of the clock ticking during the hours of 7pm and 7am when he isn't buzzing around the ED.
Jack's never had much use for sitting still. Even in his mother's womb he'd kick like a mule and somersault if she sat down for more than twenty minutes.
Or so she loves to tell him.
Her sleep pattern was fucked up long before he popped out of her on the backseat of his parents Mustang. Now, he guesses, he's bound by something bigger than him that pushes his body to keep going, something great and vast and immeasurable that dwells in the dead hours when feels so very alive.
Moving the body he's trained to exist in the dark; the nighttime guided around him by his own hands.

When Tommy was a kid he had a mirror at the end of his bed. After lights out, Tommy! his mom would remind him that if he peeked over the edge of his covers and chanced a look at his reflection in the dark, the devil would be there to look right back at him.
So say your prayers, she'd remind him from his doorway, and keep your eyes shut tight.
And Tommy did, even when his childhood became more menacing than any monster in the mirror could ever be.
His mom never gave him any guidance about what to do if the devil crawled out of the mirror, though.

The stretch emphasizes the bumps of her ribcage, and Karen helpfully presses a finger right below the pink-brown welt of scar tissue. The keloid, which seems to be having a tough time healing correctly, represents the place that Captain Nash stuck his finger into Hen’s body to help re-inflate her left lung. Evan stares at it in awe, like someone might look at a newborn baby.
