Summary
Late nights burning the midnight oil till his wrists are sore doesn't kill him, no. His workload anxiety was merely a scar, one that will bleed for quite some time, but it won't kill him.
He's taken worse hits, like a deep stab to the gut as he watches Alhaitham walk away from him, unsure whether he'll ever get to see his junior look back at him again. Perhaps he will, when Alhaitham recognizes his voice in a crowd, a hint of recognition and light in those—fuck, those damned eyes of his, and he says nothing, not an extra second of a glance as he looks away. Because he should. Because that's what he's supposed to do. Because that's what they promised each other, moments before he stood up first.
This is what kills him.
