Shane picks up almost instantly. “Ilya?” His voice is sharp, already awake. “What’s wrong?”
Ilya clears his throat. His voice comes out quiet, reserved, almost childlike. “You were right,” he admits. “I… I have been throwing up.”
There is silence from Shane and Ilya feels a wave of panic run through him.
“I feel very terrible,” Ilya adds, blinking fast as his eyes burn. “Could you please just come?”

He wishes he was back home in Jersey, curled up around Nico, sore in all the right places and ready for their pregame nap. Or in Michigan, exhausted from a day out on the boat, skin sun kissed and warm from the Summer sun. Instead he’s in Vancouver, recovering from a season-ending surgery while his brothers, best friends and boyfriend are scattered around the world still playing hockey.

Immediately after his baby brother delivers the line of all lines, Jack’s head snaps up so fast he’s 99.9% certain he’s given himself whiplash. At first, he thinks it’s the painkillers making him hallucinate, except he’s not due for another round of those until…Well, he’s not quite sure when his next dose is, but he knows that Nico will kiss his forehead and hand over his emotional support water bottle when it’s time.

Luke decides to entertain himself with a TikTok trend, which brings out the ugly monster also known as Jack "Possessive" Hughes. Complete with pouting, extreme jealousy, and Nico being a total sap over his boyfriend.

Luke feels bile in the back of his throat–Jack shouldn't be comforting him, he should be reassuring Jack that it will be alright, that they’ll win for him against the Stars, that he won't cry, that Jack will come back, but all he can manage is the burning feeling in his chest that lets him know he's about to cry.

They swore on it once. Swore that they would play together until they couldn’t play anymore, until their knees and feet gave out, and that when the time came, their numbers would hang from the rafters side by side. They knew, even then, that they had about as much control over their futures as they did the weather.
Still. The weight of their pinkies hooked together as they swore on it felt like it meant something. Felt like a promise they could keep.
