Summary
“You can keep flapping, or whatever it was you were doing when I came in,” Will says. “You don’t need to hide that from me. It’s not like I didn’t see it when we were kids.”
Oh. That. Mike doesn’t do that anymore. He’s not supposed to. It was childish even then, at the ripe age of eight. That’s what his mom and teachers said, at least. They’d make fun of him for all sorts of stuff— fidgeting, rocking, chewing on his fingers. He’s grown up now. He doesn’t need it.
Will must read the hesitation on his face, because he nudges his shoe again. “Come on. I know you want to. It always used to help when you were upset like this.”

Summary
The anniversary effect is very real; they’ve all felt it. Especially Will, as another shiver racks through him, stronger than the last. This time, Will takes a step closer to Mike and presses their shoulders together. Whether it’s for body heat or comfort, Mike doesn’t know, but he isn’t going to complain.
If he can’t protect Will from the horrible memories and sleepless nights, he can at least protect him from the autumn breeze. He quickly tugs off his leather jacket and holds it out for Will to take, who looks down at it in surprise.
“What?” he asks, glancing between it and Mike, like he doesn’t know what to do with it.
“You’re cold,” Mike states, no room for question. He knows that Will would lie about it if he could.

Summary
There’s this moment just before. When your chair tips, or you miss the last step of the stairs. Your stomach twisting, pupils dilating, hands coming out to catch yourself. A moment in which time seems to slow down, when you look down at the ground and you realize you’re helpless to stop it. No matter what you do, no matter how hard you’ll fight it, gravity will win. And you want to fight it, oh, yes, you do, but even the most stubborn people in the world have to admit at some point that they’ve lost this time. There’s nothing to do but accept it. To stop the fight and brace yourself instead.
Slowly, and then all at once, time rushes back.
And you fall.
