Pulling back for a breath, Chloe meets Safi’s eyes- watching her open mouth pant, eyes flickering down to Chloe’s mouth.
Chloe can see her mouth twist, jaw working.
“What?” Chloe husks, fully intent on leaning back into another kiss.
“What’s that taste in your mouth? Because it’s definitely not a cigarette.” Safi pulls a face.
Chloe is trying to gauge if Safi likes it or not- and if it’s a hygiene problem, before it dawns on her.
“It’s Max,” Chloe whispers her tone goading.

Safi or well, now Safi-Max, leaned over a shirtless Chloe on the bed. Clearly smug in knowing what she was doing by shape-shifting into Max. She paused in her pursuit to briefly meet Max’s eyes before she grabbed Chloe in a filthy kiss.

Summary
And as quiet as her old junker can be, she pulls into the driveway ten minutes later, killing the engine. She leans back against the seat, and then there’s Max, clueless and glowing as she sits next to her under the stern light of the streetlamp, glowing as the mouth of the moon opens wide. The last of the summer’s whining cicadas are clicking in the darkness around them, and Chloe finds herself stuck in this thick, sticky October headspace, like Max still lives two houses down and they just got back from one of their middle-of-the-night drugstore raids. It’s the most simple, sweet thing that she’s felt in a long while.

It’s been a weird year. Chloe’s going to Hamilton now, her first year of junior high, and Max is still at Douglas Elementary. It’s the first time since she met Max that they’ve been at different schools. Most friendships, Chloe knows, wouldn’t survive being split up like that but she and Max are special. Pirates for life. She’s not about to let anything get in the way of that.
