Summary
Rhaenyra presents as an alpha on her thirteenth name day, a few moons after Alicent Hightower presented as an omega. They are betrothed and set to wed after Rhaenyra's older brother Baelon weds Laena Velaryon once she turns fifteen. However, tragedy befalls the House of the Dragons as Prince Baelon Targaryen, heir to the Iron Throne, meets his untimely demise before his marriage.
Now, the Velaryons are left to contest the betrothal rights to wed Laena to the new heir of the Iron Throne as promised. Lord Corlys proposes that he will not take the slight to his family and pressures the King to wed Laena to Rhaenyra as agreed. This results in the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, meaning that Rhaenyra is taking two wives to the throne.
With the agreement that Laena Velaryon's children take precedence due to her House prestige and direct Valyrian blood, this means that any children Rhaenyra shall sire with Alicent are to be recognised as only spares for the Iron Throne.

He clears the path for them and Alicent means to follow, holding onto Helaena tightly. But she feels her daughter lag behind, her grasp on Alicent’s arm has weakened. No. She refuses. Alicent turns back and slings Helaena’s arm across her shoulders, taking on her weight, dragging her along. She will not leave her behind, she is a part of her. Ser Rickard appears shocked at Helaena’s appearance, but Alicent pays him little mind. “This way, inside!” he calls out before rushing to the front of the wheelhouse.
“Come on, Helaena, please,” Alicent pleads with her as she tries to carry her up the stairs into the carriage. She has grown too big, Alicent cannot carry her around anymore as she used to do. Her little girl. When did she grow up?

Summary
And even if getting Rhaenyra in as a soloist was a staggering show of nepotism, she was still the best concert pianist on the planet. It was like when Dmitri Junior recorded Shostakovich’s second. You could get mad about it for a bit, but it was ultimately fair game. Alicent had already reached all these conclusions because Viserys had spoken to her weeks ago about programming the Concerto, which only had the unwanted effect of giving her time to turn it over in her brain like a particularly nauseating Rubix cube. Each solution of the puzzle led her to the same conclusion: she would be seeing Rhaenyra imminently, and there wasn’t a damn thing she could do about it.
After ten years apart, Rhaenyra Targaryen re-enters Alicent's life for a set of solo engagements with her orchestra. Things go about as well as expected (not very).
