Backroom conversations, quiet lunches, the odd promising junior hovering just out of sight, drivers with resumes hot off the presses or egos already calcified by a seat they hadn’t earned. The thought of who he might be paired with, compared to mild-mannered, dependable Lewis, made his skin crawl.
As the season wore on, the speculation only grew. Pundits promised answers by summer shutdown. Fans demanded certainty. George waited. Nothing came.
Then, come Zandvoort, Mercedes announced an FP1 outing for Toto’s bloodthirsty Formula 2 protégé in George’s car despite Lewis being the one he was meant to replace, which felt personal, frankly.
And on Friday night, in front of a home crowd drunk on orange smoke and seawater, Mercedes finally made it official.
18-year-old Max Verstappen would be the next driver to wear the Silver Arrows.

That wasn’t a complaint. Just an observation. Like noticing the weather had turned or that the apples in hospitality were bad again.
George Russell had apparently decided that wherever Oscar was standing was the correct place to be. This was true at national anthems, in the paddock, in the media pen, and—most impressively—exactly when Oscar was attempting to film something for McLaren’s social channels.
Every race weekend, without fail, George found him. Especially if he needed an umbrella.

For six seasons, the Formula 1 paddock is convinced George Russell is painfully, impressively single.
Then he walks in holding hands with a woman in a plain white shirt, denim shorts and scuffed Adidas sneakers and the narrative detonates.
Max Verstappen doesn’t look like a WAG.
Doesn’t act like one and doesn’t seem remotely impressed by the chaos she’s just caused.
George, meanwhile, is doing his best to balance a championship campaign with the sudden realization that the entire world has Opinions about his girlfriend.As cameras linger, narratives spiral and assumptions pile up, one thing becomes clear: Formula 1 has no idea what to do with Max Verstappen and she’s perfectly fine with that.
“Are you nervous?” George asks, his thumb brushing over her knuckles as he laces their fingers together.
“No.” Max said honestly. Then, after a beat:
“I just didn’t realize I was a rare species or that you’d apparently discovered me in the wild.”George laughs under his breath.
