“Would the lady like me to take her coat?”
She accepts his offer and goes to her usual booth, in the corner of the small building where she can watch the crosswalk activities as she takes the pins out of her wig. She enjoys people-watching within the diner as well. She’ll chit-chat with the regulars, but she saves her conversational appetite for when Trixie has time to sit across from her and steal a bite of her food. Again, for him, she’ll make exceptions.
Odds are Trixie is her soulmate. Or whatever is closest to that. She’s not afraid to say this out loud, half-joking when they’re having too good of a time, because he knows how to agree without making it awkward. And by that, she means calling it what it is. He has a crush on her, and she on him, there’s no denying, but to entertain it would be stupid.

Summary
The man offers his hand to her. Katya’s first thought upon gazing down at it, the dirt-filled fingernails, the dinner-plate sized palm, is that he could smother her. She squats down and takes his hand in hers and shakes it, makes sure to grip his hand tight with her fingers like she does with every executive she has to meet, to show that she means business.

Summary
In fifteen minutes of walking in the yellow-orange blaze of the late-night, Trixie learns of Katya’s most imminent personal growth goals.
She wants to relearn the violin this summer, after years of no practice. She wants to convince her family that she didn’t make a mistake six months ago when she quit her job teaching at the French Cultural Center in Boston and moved to comedy’s mecca to start her life over (supplemented by tutoring at UIC and waitressing). She wants to be a better home cook and move into a nice apartment. She wants to get a dog. Most of all, she wants to make friends here so she isn’t lonely anymore.
(Trixie is a sound tech for various stand-up showcases all over Chicago. Enter Katya, a bright light of dark humor in a sea of bad comedic timing.)

Summary
She's staring at a drawing up on the wall and Brian thinks it must be Anton's at first, but realizes it couldn't be, as they're in a higher grade level's hallway. Katya moves slowly towards it as if entranced by the crude caricature of a dog surrounded by the artist's family.
Brian comes to stand behind her, though at a respectable distance. The quietness of the hallway resembles one of the art museums he's taken Jolene to, the contemplative atmosphere wrapping around him and Katya until it is shattered when she brings her hand across the space between her and the drawing to touch it. She spreads her fingers across the paper, her meaty palm masking the body of the dog.
