Because either mark's so lonely he conjured up an imaginary coping device or he's severely mistreating his newly adopted dog who's life is at great risk. Hence, as Mark's friends and just animal-loving people in general (one of which owns an actual dog by the way) they cant just sit by and let Mark kill his own pet, if it really is real, then he'd be a murderer on top of a devastated mess.
