A few tables away, a boy was laughing at something one of his friends said, head tipped back slightly, one hand coming up to push his hair out of his face, like the laugh had caught him off guard and he hadn't been ready for it. He said something back, quick and easy, and the whole table cracked up. He had this way of talking with his hands, small gestures punctuating whatever he was saying, like he couldn't quite help it.
Martin didn't know him. Had never seen him before, as far as he could tell, probably an upperclassman, judging by the uniform details, someone from a completely different part of the building and a completely different world.
He didn't know why he couldn't look away.
