I'm not, I'm fine. There’s-...” Mapplethorpe can't seem to find the right words–he just wants to hide in the soft pillow beneath his head and make Chester forget everything he's seen tonight. “There's something wrong with me, I think. Feels like zombie Joan is stabbing me in the back or something.”
Mapplethorpe doesn't know how to explain this to Chester, to show him that somehow, still in death, he's hurting. He's not one for being vulnerable, hiding behind quick gags and laughter. Chester is the more mature one, who apologizes first, who starts hard conversations. Mapplethorpe is at a loss as to how to do this.
“So…you’re hurt? But you're not injured?” Chester is trying hard to understand.
“It hurts all the time, like I'm still falling off this roller coaster.” Mapplethorpe turns, hiding a groan as he faces Chester on his knees. “But I'm fine. I'm not actually hurt, my bones aren't broken, I'm the most alive a dead person can be.”
“I don't understand.” Chester is barely audible, hiding back tears.
“I don't either.” He sounds defeated.
Or
Mapplethorpe has phantom back pain related to his death, even as a ghost. On a particularly hard night, Chester notices.

Summary
“I thought I could help with this,” Ryan says, hand pressing down onto Naim’s lower stomach, over his bladder, while the other hand holds Naim down.
Naim lets out a whimper, the sensation overwhelming him. It felt so wrong. It felt so so good.
“Maybe it could help with nightmares. With your body doing things you can’t control.”
Ryan leaned down then, his mouth finding Naim's ear, breath hot and intimate. Naim swallowed, breathing hitching as Ryan pressed a warm kiss against his jaw, hand moving lower, slipping beneath the waistband of Naim’s wet boxers.
The shame was still there, coiled tight in his chest, but something else was rising alongside it. Heat and want. The terrifying, all-consuming desire to be seen completely, even in this.

or, Naim wakes from another nightmare, the mattress damp beneath him and soaked in shame. Ryan is not nearly as bothered by it as Naim thinks he should be.

“Naim is an absolute vision in the strobing lights, glitter catching on the ridges of his cheekbones like stars. They sway to the music, not quite really dancing yet, but Naim keeps moving his head side to side, the beat moving him in a way Ryan’s not quite privy to yet. Give it time, Naim would tell him. Listen to this other playlist. You’ll get it.”
Ryan’s never believed in the idea of providing for anyone before his relationship with Naim. Preparing to attend their first rave together changes that.

“Nah, fuck Paris,” he says, nipping at the underside of Naim’s chin to make him laugh again, the kind of startled laugh that doesn’t know how to be self-conscious. Oh, Ryan thinks, he loves him.
He can’t say it out loud, not yet, notyetnotyetnotyet, so he chooses to be honest about the rest of it instead, says, “We’ll figure out Melbourne first. Yeah? Then—I dunno. We’ll go wherever you wanna go.”
“I wanna go where you wanna go,” Naim whispers, unbearably honest-sounding. Scratch that, thinks Ryan.
This is the happiest he’s ever been.
