Aventurine's plan in Penacony fails. Ratio comes to his rescue. The plan? Marry Screwllum for his protection.
There's a reason he isn't called Ratio of Stratagems.
"Why him?" Aventurine asks, trying to puzzle out the catch when Ratio suggests Screwllum. "I thought you despised those genius types. Trying to sell me off to your archnemesis, huh?"
"Because I trust him with my life."
"Whoa, Doctor. That's quite the confession. Careful, someone might use that against you someday."
"Don't be obtuse. Screwllum is my husband. Breathe a word of that to anyone and I'll hand you to Sunday myself."
Wait— What? Ratio was married? Aventurine laughs shrilly. Maybe he hit his head harder than he thought. "Doctor, you’re losing me here. You want me to marry your husband?"
"Do you object? We can extract you from Penacony in under 2 system hours."

Aventurine lingers in the bathroom doorway for a long moment, leaning on the doorframe and taking in the sight of Ratio’s bare skin breaking above the water’s surface, flush with heat. He reclines comfortably against the basin’s edge, chin tipped to the ceiling, revealing the strong sinuous line of his throat. His eyes are closed in meditation or sleep.
“Well? Are you going to just stand there and gawk,” Ratio drawls without opening his eyes.
“And if I did?” Aventurine teases, his instinct to sass and flirt still fully functioning, despite the panicked rabbiting of his heart. Echoes of the nightmare still cling to the eaves of his mind.
“Suit yourself.”
The challenge rises in Aventurine’s blood. He enters, sylphlike, a ghost of his usual clamorous self. It is the silence of his movement that causes Ratio’s eyes to open and narrow on him, trying to pinpoint what’s different as he tracks his approach.
“Is there something you need?” Ratio asks pointedly.
You, Aventurine thinks. I need you.

It is Ratio’s turn to have few words, but not because there is nothing to say. There are too many words between them, roadblocks and speedbumps and hurdles, and he is a hunter, he does not slow down. He takes Aventurine’s chin between his thumb and forefinger and turns him to face him, to look straight in his eyes.
“You state the obvious, █ █ ██ █.” He speaks a name Aventurine has not heard in a very long time. “Use your words.”
Aventurine is trapped, held, a grounded peacock ensnared. Use me, the thought consumes him, becomes all that he is. A tongue of blue flame. Use me.
