So! After collecting all thirty-five mistletoes, Bucky tucks the box under his arm, making sure anyone - particularly those named Alexei - doesn’t see him walk out of the common room with it. He’s not particularly keen on explaining his reasons for committing a Christmas crime, after all.
Besides, Bucky has a plan.
For once.
And the plan is… admittedly very selfish.
(But also involves putting Alexei’s money to good use, so. Win-win.)
So what if, tonight, he wants to greet his girlfriend under a mistletoe?
…Or, you know. Thirty-five mistletoes, to be exact?

But as they slowly make their way out of the ruined structure - four of them limping, coughing, and bruised - Ava stays behind for a moment.
Just watching them.
Remembering the split-second she was standing in the open space - alone - after the building came down on them all.
It digs under her ribs like a hook.
I– I should have been able to phase them along with me.
The idea takes root in her brain. She turns it this way and that, and the longer she ruminates on the thought, the more it feels like an urgent need.
Especially after today.

That’s the great thing about a free day; the hours are hers to spend however she pleases. No scheduled briefings with Val, no Yelena or Walker yelling in her ear. Just… this. Existing. Like how she imagines a normal person would, on the regular.
Ava starts walking again.
But it doesn’t take long before she hears the quiet footsteps behind her. Light, but measured. Familiar. The kind she hears every day back at the Watchtower.
She fights off a smile before it can even take shape.
Then she glances over her shoulder to confirm her suspicions.
Of course.
Bucky himself stands a few paces back, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, looking casual, almost tourist-y. And yet there’s a certain look on his face that’s too obvious to be ignored. Like he’s just waiting for her to discover him.

“—Ava. Ava, hey. Look at me.”
And she tries to meet his eyes. But the flickering’s getting worse, the hum in her chest feeling like a broken, discordant note ever spreading outward. She reaches out to him with her half-phased hand, voice catching somewhere between breath and fear.
“I can’t—”
His own - Bucky’s flesh one - grabs for her shoulder in an attempt to ground her. Or at least, it tries to - except the hand goes right through her body. A look flashes across his face, and she recognizes it well: shock. Followed closely by confusion, then helplessness.
For one wild moment, her stomach drops. This is it. She’s disappearing for real.
Except Bucky doesn’t stop moving. Tries again, fails, tries again to touch her. “—shit,” he hisses. “Wait. Hold on.”
For some reason, he switches hands. His other arm — the one made of vibranium — moves through the haze of her body this time.
And somehow, it connects.

She glares at him, almost mutinously. "What do you think? Obviously, they're baked goods."
"No, no." Yelena shakes her head at her. "Those are not baked goods. Those are baked bads. There isn't anything good in that tray, Ava."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Didn't realize I'm in the presence of a Michelin chef." Ava just raises her chin at Yelena. "Please. Like you can do any better?"
"Well, yes. Very, very easily. I mean, if that's the baseline--"
