Summary
On October 31, 1981, Lily Potter is found dead next to her son's crib and James Potter has never managed to shake the guilt of leaving her alone that night. Lost in grieving, he packs up his son and best friend and tries to start a new life on the other side of the world, far away from the wartorn wizarding world of his youth.
But the past refuses to be left behind. With the shadow of their departure mired in scandal back home that brands them with the scornful suspicion of a wizarding population whose minds turn easily, James and Sirius have spent the last ten years giving Harry the best childhood they can. Yet when Harry's letter inevitably comes, James struggles to come to terms with letting go, especially with the knowledge of the threat still out there amidst the manipulations of the most powerful wizard in magical Britain who wants nothing more than for his son to be canon fodder in the upcoming war, as well as a lingering bitterness between his remaining friends, and the whispers of the malignant presence of a man who should have remained dead.
