Summary
Billy is a convict serving a 10-year banishment sentence under an assumed name. Abigail arrives on the arm of a well-intentioned, if deeply naive, minister on a mission to spread the Reformation to the Crown's most derelict residents.
They shared a connection once years before that has followed them all the way to Camp Jackson, just far enough to make a mess. Billy wants nothing more than to serve his sentence before disappearing as a free man, but he can only ignore the plight of the oppressed for so long, nor can he repress the feelings that stir when he sees Abigail again. Abigail wants to help her idealistic husband and fulfill the role of the reverend's wife, but the gritty realities of slavery and imprisonment of indigenous peoples challenge their mutual understandings of morality. In the midst of every new challenge the frontier presents, Abigail comes to realize that what she feels for her husband is not what she feels for Billy.
There may be no better place to overturn conventions than the border where society ends and real freedom begins.
