Bakugou Katsuki had been nothing but proud when he had first gotten his quirk. People praised him for his quirk told him that it was great and that he would become a hero.
He loved to show his quirk of to his friends and the other kids at school. The one thing he didn’t like was the ringing noise in his ears that became worse and worse till it even started to hurt his ears.
Bakugou turned around shocked as he was snapped out of his thoughts when he suddenly felt a hand on his shoulder.
Blasting a small explosion towards the boy that had tapped him on the shoulders.
“What the hell Deku, don’t sneak up on people you idiot!” he shouted as he looked at the freckled boy.
“Stop mumbling I can’t hear you like that!” He shouted as the boy took a step back. “Bu.. I was call…. So I..n’t … snea…up .n.. ou.”
“HA!” “I said that I was calling for you, so I didn’t sneak up on you at all!” Midoriya shouted as Bakugou stared shocked at him.
“Kacchan are you alright?” Izuku asked as he walked towards him placing a hand on his friends shoulder who flinched for a moment.
“Of course I’m fine Deku!” he shouted as he slapped the other four year olds hand away. “But why are you shouting!” “I’m not!” Bakugou shouted back.
It wasn’t much longer after that that Bakugou had become almost completely deaf.
The doctors had said that his quirk was most likely the cause and that they would give him hearing aids to improve his damaged hearing.
Bakugou hated being deaf, he had let his hair grow out so that his hearing aids would be hidden behind his ash blond hair.
If there was one thing he didn’t want, it was his classmates finding out. Midoriya was the only one in their class who knew about it.
Bakugou had threatened him to keep his mouth shut about it and Midoriya had promised not to tell anyone.
Bakugou trusted him when it came to this because they may weren’t the friends they used to be, but Midoriya wasn’t one to just break a promise.
It was during training when it went wrong. Yuuei’s class 1-A was having another day of combat training when Bakugou had to fight against Kaminari.
He watched the lightning user grin as they walked up towards each other as his previous partner had gone off for a break.
“Something bout checking if he hadn’t lost a tooth or something.” Bakugou honestly hadn’t really payed attention to why Sero had walked off.
“Show me what you got Sparky.” Bakugou shouted as Kaminari lifted his eyebrows at the nickname.
Kaminari smiled as he ran towards Bakugou who send a blast towards him as he barely dodged it.
Kaminari dodged the following attacks until he managed to hit him straight in the chest as he send a jolt of electricity through him.
Bakugou winched as the sound around him turned to static before a hit connected to the left side of his face sending another jolt through him as he fell onto the ground.
He covered his left ear with his hand as he got up as all the noise had left on that side of his head.
He pulled the hearing aid out and hid in the pocket of his sport clothes without the other noticing.
Kaminari took a step back as he noticed the glint in Bakugou’s eyes as he ran towards him.
He send a large jolt of electricity around him, sending a jolt through Bakugou who gritted his teeth as he jumped up to avoid most of the attack as he blasted himself towards Kaminari with his explosions. Bakugou managed to land a hit in the other boy’s abandonment with a large blast from his right hand, as Kaminari was smashed against the ground.
Kaminari let out a pained moan as Kirishima ran towards him to help him back onto his feet.
“Bakugou what the hell don’t you think that was a bit too much.” Kirishima said as the blond walked off without a word as the two stared at their retreating friend.
Class came to an end not much later as the groups split up towards the changing rooms.
He dug the hearing aid out of his pocket as he stared at the broken device before putting it back in its case before he took the other one out as it was giving nothing but static.
He wiped the blood of his ear that had come off when he had tugged the piece out with too much force during class. He winced as he rubbed the blood off before he started to get dressed.
“Is Bakugou-kun alright? It looks like somethings bothering him.” Iida asked as he threw a look at Bakugou who had been ignoring them.
“Dunno, it’s not like he lost or something. Bastard kicked my ass.” Kaminari said.
“Midoriya do you have any idea what’s going on?” Tokoyami asked. “Midoriya…?” he asked again as he didn’t seem to response.
“Oh no it’s contagious!” Kirishima shouted as he started to shake him out of it.
“Wha…” “Stop spacing out, we were asking if you know what’s up with Bakugou.” Kirishima said as he crossed his arms over his chest.
Midoriya had meanwhile been staring at Bakugou he had noticed how the blond had taken his hearing aids out which wasn’t unusual if he would take a shower but he thought he saw something on Bakugou’s left ear before Kirisihima had snapped him out of it.
“Oh sorry, I don’t know Kacchan just tends to get like that sometimes.” Izuku said as he stared back at the hearing aids in Bakugou’s hands. Wondering if something happened to them.
Bakugou finished getting dressed as he slammed the door of his locker shut before turning around to walk of as he bumbed into Ojiro.
“What the hell, get out of my way!!” He shouted as the others all turned to look at them. “Wow Bakugou calm down, Ojiro did nothing…” Kaminari said.
“Bakugou you shouldn’t raise your voice like that during…” Iida said as he started to wave his hands, but it fell on deaf ears as Bakugou walked passed them as he left the changing room.
“Somethings really bugging him.” Kirishima said. “Okay Kaminari spit it out what you do?” “I didn’t do anything!” he shouted as Kirishima burst out in laughter.
“I’m going after him.” Midoriya said. “Wait you didn’t..’ Iida shouted as he left the changing room only to return a moment later as the others now burst out in laughter as they saw his red face.
“forgot my shirt.” Izuku mumbled as he finished getting dressed.
“Just be glad that you didn’t take Ojiro’s pants by accident.” Kirishima said as the others remembered how he had gone back to class once without noticing.
The others entered the classroom as Thirteen was going to talk to them about the rescue training they were going to do tomorrow.
Bakugou groaned in annoyance when he remembered that Thirteen was teaching them rescue training as he realized that it was going to be impossible for him to read his lips,
not that he ever did a good enough job at it. It wasn’t like he had never tried to read someone’s lips but with some people it was just impossible.
The rescue hero was talking about how they were going to hold a rescue training tomorrow with teams, one team being the villains, one team being the heroes, and one team being the hostages.
The heroes would have to beat the villains or rescue the other heroes before the time limit had passed. Thirteen started to ask them a few things till he turned to Bakugou to ask him a question.
The others turned to look towards him as he had ignored Thirteens question for the third time.
“Bakugou!” The others looked up at Eraserhead who stepped out of his sleeping bag that laid in the class corner.
He watched the ash blond as he showed no sign of noticing him. Azaiwa knew that the boy had behavior problems, but this wasn’t something the blond would normally do.
“Bakugou we need to talk.” He said again as Bakugou looked at him with a confused but irritated look on his face.
Oh great the bastard with the scarfs got up, wasn’t this supposed to be that rescue heroes class. What the hell was the sleepy bastard saying.
He was watching him but the scarfs where making it hard for him to see his lips fully move as he cursed the heroes stupid suits inside his head.
That was till he felt a hand suddenly onto his shoulder. He flinched at the touch before turning around to see a scarred hand on his shoulder.
“What!!” The blond shouted as he looked at Deku who pulled his hand back before he pointed a finger towards one of his own ears.
“What about it?” Bakugou signed using his hands.
“Why aren’t you wearing them? Thirteen and Azaiwa-Sensei where talking to you but you didn’t react.” Midoriya signed using his hands as Bakugou watched him.
“Kaminari broke them during class.” He signed furiously. “Don’t you have spares?” “No, I don’t!” Bakugou signed back at him, his hands shaking with anger.
“But you can read their lips right” “I can’t, not with Thirteens stupid helmet and Azaiwa’s stupid scarfs in the way. I can’t read lips if I can’t see them can I?!” Bakugou shouted as Midoriya flinched back.
“Why would you need to read their lips in the first place.” Tsuyu said as the frog girl looked at them with her big green eyes. “Jeah and what are you two doing with your hands, I mean it’s really funny to see but I don’t get it.” Kaminari said smiling as Bakugou let a curse out realizing that he had started signing back towards Deku when they were still in class.
Of course the frog girl would comment on it the girl always said the first thing on her mind.
He hadn’t heard what the two were saying but he guessed that it was about what they were doing with their hands.
“Bakugou-kun you aren’t deaf by any change?” Iida asked as he stared at the blond before turning towards Midoriya who tried to look away.
“Midoriya?” “Oh uhm..I promised not to say anything about that so I uhm…” he mumbled as he earned a slap against the back of his head before Bakugou signed at him.
“I’m not gonna say that.” Midoriya said while he signed back.
“Bakugou I don’t care if you want to keep things like this to yourself but once it’s something that could affect you and the others during hero work it’s important to inform the others.
I don’t know why you aren’t wearing you’re hearing aids if your deaf to begin with but…”
“Dah sensei slowdown..” Midoriya shouted as he was trying to catch up with signing towards Bakugou as some of the others tried to hold back a laugh as Midoriya finished signing.
“Because that bastard wrecked them during training.” Bakugou sighned before pointing towards Kaminari who looked startled. “Midoriya…”
“Bakugou says that you wrecked them when you two where sparring. I think you’re electricity caused them to short circuit.” Midoriya said while rubbing the back of his head.
“So he can short circuit something besides his own brain I’m supriced.” Jiro said as she smiled. “What, hey that’s not fair.” He shouted.
“Bakugou go to the old lady for a checkup on your ears and ask her if she can get you a new pair. Midoriya go with him. You two can go back to the dorms after that.” Azaiwa said as the two got up.
“You know this kinda explains why Bakugou is always so loud with the shouting and everything.” Ashido said as they made their way back to the dorms.
“Well I gotta say I like the silent Bakugou, gives my ears some rest, maybe I should wreck those things more often.” Kaminari said as he earned a slap for Iida in the back of his head.
“Kaminari behavior and comments like that are unactable. We should help Bakugou as fellow classmates.” Iida shouted as he waved his hands as Jiro nearly avoided being slapped in the face.
“Say Iida you’re not deaf by any change either are you.” “What no why would you say that.” Iida asked as he looked at Uraraka walking in front of him.
“Oh well since you also always shout so much I thought…” Uraraka said as Kirishima burst out in laughter. “She has a point dude.”
“I’m surprised Midoriya actually knows sign language.” Yaoyorozu said. “I don’t know, the two of them used to be childhood friends, so I guess it’s not that strange for Midoriya to know sign language.” Todoroki said as they entered the dorms. They were greeted by the greenhaired boy sitting onto one of the couches as there was no sign of Bakugou. “Where’s Bakugou?” “In his room” Midoriya replied as the others entered the living room.
The others stared at each other for a bit till Kirishima decided to ask the freckled boy about what had happened.
“Say Midoriya we were wondering, how long has Bakugou been like that?” Kirishima asked as he sat down beside him as the others sat down as well.
“I’m not really supposed to talk about it, Kacchan never really wanted anyone to know so..” “But It doesn’t matter since we already know right?” Uraraka asked.
“Jeah I guess.. Kacchan actually started to become deaf after he got his quirk. It wasn’t right away or anything but the more he used his quirk the worse his hearing got.
He started to shout more and he was startled even when people called out to him because he hadn’t been able to hear them from far.
Soon after that he started to miss things going around him more and more, he couldn’t hear us anymore like he used to, same went for his parents.
It was already too late when Kacchan and his parents figured out that it was because of the explosions caused by his quirk.” Midoriya mumbled as the others stared at him.
“That one time when Bakugou slammed his explosion into the ground during the survivor training my ears wouldn’t stop ringing. It hurt like hell and because he uses those blast again and again it’s no surprise that he has gone deaf.” Jiro said as the others looked at her.
“Jeah you’re right, that blast he shot at me during the sportfestival was way loud.
I guess I never figured a flashy quirk like that would have such a drawback.” Kirishima said as Uraraka and Todoroki agreed with him.
“Oh Deku-kun I was thinking what if Bakugou would have something that would protect his ears, like something he can put on during training or something.”
Uraraka said as Midoriya smiled before he got up. “Jeah and I think I know someone who can help with that. Kirishima come with me I need your help for a bit.”
Midoriya shouted as he pulled Kirishima with him. "Oh and thanks Uraraka-san!"
“Midoriya slow down I can’t keep up like this, where are we going?” Kirishima asked as the two ran back towards the school.
“What Uraraka said it got me an idea. Remember Hatsume Mei from the support department?” Midoriya asked as the two rushed back into the school. “Jeah the crazy chick right what about her?”
“I was thinking that she could make us something for Kacchan, like something that protects his ears during combat.
So that something like today won’t happen again.” “Midoriya that’s seriously awesome.” Kirishima said as he smiled back at him.
Bakugou looked up from his desk as Midoriya handed him a small metal case in class. “What...” “Just open it.” Kirishima said as Bakugou took the case as he opened it.
“Where do I need earrings for if you think I’m gonna get my ears pierced..”
“What no look their protectors that cover your ears.” Kirishima said as he took one of the round protector cases out of the metal case before placing it over one of Bakugou’s ears.
“Hatsume made them for you, they should protect your ears from psychical contact and cancel the use of quirks like Kaminari’s out so that what happened last week won’t happen again.” Midoriya said as Bakugou took the other one out of the case as he noticed the orange ring around the edge of the black protectors. "We asked if she could make them to match your hero suit." Kirisihima said as Bakugou placed the other one over his other ear.
“Well I guess that there’s nothing holding me back anymore from taking revenge on Kaminari. I mean you wrecked my hearing aids after all you didn’t think I’d just let that slide did you.” Bakugou said as a sinister smile spread across his face.
“We are going to miss you Kaminari.” Tokoyama said as he turned his head away. “Don’t worry we’ll be attending to your funeral.” Todoroki said as Kaminari clutched the front of his uniform.
“What no way, come on Todoroki since when did you start making jokes.” Kaminari shouted. “I’m not joking, I’m actually serious why would I make a joke about coming to your funeral?” Todoroki asked with a small smile. “You’re so mean, Midoriya come on let’s be sparring partners from now on.” “Sorry but I already promised Todoroki-kun.” Midoriya said as he tried to hide his smile.
“What did I ever do to you!” “Well you’re an idiot, you’ve electrocuted more than one person in this class. You’ve short circuited your brain more than ones, and you wrecked Bakugou’s hearing aids.” Jiro said. “What’s wrong with you when someone asks that you’re not supposed to respond like that!” Kaminari shouted before dashing out of the classroom with Bakugou on his tail as their screams echoed through the hallways.
