Work Text:
There are moments in Chuuya’s life where he asks himself how he can sleep at night knowing he willingly allowed things to go terribly wrong. Being an executive of a powerful underground organisation? No worries there. Knowing that he has blood of countless souls who dare cross his path? All good. Allowing his boyfriend to navigate the both of them to a restaurant in the middle of Yokohama city? The worst idea he has ever had.
“OK I am super sure this is the right street now, we’re almost there” Ranpo says while looking down at his phone at a GPS map of the city. It just so happened that Ranpo’s phone was the only one that had good signal in the middle of the city, and it just so happened that Ranpo had heard of a really nice place for food and wanted to take Chuuya there, and it just so happened to be the day that he realises how bad Ranpo is with directions.
“Ranpo you have been saying that for the past 30 minutes,” Chuuya groans, taking off his hat to fan his face. It doesn’t help that it’s the middle of the summer and the temperatures are way above the average that they’re used to. The roads full of traffic from commuters wanting to get home, and the suns’ rays bouncing off the windows of the surrounding buildings down onto the unsuspecting public down below. He’s incredibly thankful that he opted for a light buttoned shirt and pants instead of a typical blazer he wears on dates out. One of them has to look the part, and it wasn’t going to be Ranpo who chose to wear a t-shirt and sleeveless hoodie, with a pair of loose shorts which are perfect for the summer heat, minus his trademark cap.
Chuuya was already considering if worst does come to worst he could always just leave Ranpo to find the place on his own and follow the trail of sweat back home like Dorothy to the Emerald City.
“It’s not my fault the GPS decides to lead us in the wrong direction then jump 5 streets away!” Ranpo puffs, shaking his phone like a Polaroid in hopes the signal would re-adjust itself (He does know that won’t make a difference right?) He takes Chuuya’s hand and starts walking again, looking around the shop signage that surrounds them in hopes there will be some divine sign that they are close to their destination.
They walked for half a mile or so until Ranpo stops abruptly. He glares down at his phone, then back up around the street, then back to his phone.
“What is it?” Chuuya asks, Ranpo groans and looks up at him. Chuuya begins to panic, don’t tell him...
“We took the longest street, I thought we were on the quicker route, we have to keep walking ALL the way down here,” Ranpo whines, shoving the phone into Chuuya’s face, “Uuuugh, I just want to be there already! I’m so hungry and thirsty and tired and sweaty and it’s just not fun!”
“Then why didn’t you give me your phone in the first place?” Chuuya asks agitated, who feels pretty much the exact same and undoubtedly had a better sense of direction since he knew a good amount of the city from his work.
“And here I was wanting to look cool for my dear sweet Chuuya,” Ranpo mopes. Honestly Chuuya finds it hard to believe that Ranpo is 4 years older than him. He glances around and notices that they’re just across the road from a small park; that would be a good place to just take a break and work out what to do from there.
“Lets’ just sit for a minute and cool off for a bit, c’mon,” Chuuya grabs Ranpo’s hand tightly as they cross over to the park.
Instantly the two of them felt better as they were now surrounded with greenery and shade from the tree’s compared to the concrete towers and emissions coming from the vehicles driving past them.
They find a spot in the shade next to one of the bigger tree’s in the middle of the park; Ranpo flops down on the cool grass and takes a deep breath in and out.
“This is much better~” he says, crossing his arms behind his head as he lies down and closes his eyes. Chuuya joins him by sitting next to him, taking off his hat to let the slight breeze cool him off. He’s thankful that there are spaces like this doted around the city, spaces to get a break from the rush of the city. He takes Ranpo’s phone to look at the map. Now that he can properly study it he notices that they’re not too far away from it now; just a few blocks down the road in the right direction. But a break will let them cool off so they won’t be as sweaty and cranky the time they reach the restaurant.
Chuuya glances over to Ranpo, who was lying contently in the grass with a peaceful expression on his face. Eyes closed delicately and chest slowly rising and falling. Chuuya gently brushes the hair from his face; he better not try to fall asleep here or he’ll have to deal with this all night, even if he does look super adorable lying here right now.
He takes his fingers to stroke down his cheek, relishing in how soft his skin was. Ranpo hums, moving his hand up to clasp Chuuya’s hand resting on his face, causing a smile to rise from the corners of the Mafia Executives lips.
It’s moments like this he can appreciate the peace and tranquillity of the time. He knows full well the implications for the both of them to be together; after all they belong to rival groups each striving to destroy the other. Chuuya chuckles, funny how things can turn out like that.
They may have their times where they’ll bicker on where they want to eat, or get lost in the middle of the city, but it’s these moments Chuuya clings onto in memory for times to come. His duty is important he can’t deny that, but even he craves the mundane yet loving side of life. And he’ll treasure these moments as long as he is able to, for both their sakes.
“Hey Chuuya?” he hears from below him. He looks down to Ranpo’s sleepy eyes gazing back up at him softly, and he won’t say he looked absolutely gorgeous.
“Yeah? What is it? You’re gonna need to get up soon or we’ll never get to go eat,” Chuuya answers back, grabbing his hat from beside him to get ready to move.
“Kiss me,” Ranpo says, throwing Chuuya off course into a total blush fest.
They haven’t kissed a whole lot since they started dating, still trying to get used to the whole concept of them being together. Chuuya blames that he doesn’t want to rush things but they both know that it’s because it’s almost wrong to go against everything they had believed in.
“It’s fine if you don’t want to,” Ranpo adds, seeing the conflict in Chuuya’s eyes on the request.
“No no, it’s totally fine. I just didn’t expect it,” Chuuya tries to answer, causing Ranpo to laugh gently as he pushes himself up so that he’s face to face with Chuuya, taking his hands to Chuuya’s cheeks in return.
“It wouldn’t put it past me if you had somehow took us down the wrong road deliberately just so we can hang out like this,” Chuuya says.
“Oh? Are you complaining Mr Fancy Hat?” Ranpo jests, his thumb stroking circles across Chuuya’s cheek.
“Me? Of course not. But the more we talk and stare at each other the longer it’ll take us to get up and go eat,” Chuuya replies, moving his hands to rest on Ranpo’s shoulders.
“Then you better hurry up and kiss me,” Ranpo states, moving their heads together.
“Let me savour this jeez,” Chuuya says, taking in this warm feeling inside his heart, before edging closer and pressing delicate lips together, both smiling on contact.
There will come a time in their future where it won’t be as peaceful as this, and a point where they must choose between their line of work or each other. But with each kiss brings with it an aesthetic to these thoughts; that perhaps all the hardship could maybe work out. Either way they both agree that it's worth it in experience times like this.
There are moments in Chuuya’s life where he asks himself how he can sleep at night knowing he willingly allowed things to go terribly wrong; but having Ranpo here with him is definitely not one of those times.
