Work Text:
The station was not too crowded. The feeling was strange. For as long as he could remember, Busan’s station had always been full of people. Whether it was in the station itself, on the docks or inside the trains, people were everywhere. This year, Jimin found himself waiting alone.
Well, not exactly. A dad and his little daughter were here, probably waiting for the same train as him. And to his left he could see an old lady sitting on the bench in front of the track. But, beside them and Jimin, it was desert.
Jimin came back to Busan to visit his family since his college was situated in Seoul, the Big City. He didn’t particularly missed his hometown except for his family and the beach. The sunset was amazing there. But he could admit that some time out of the city did him some good. He had meet with his friends here and everybody wanted to know what is was like to live in Seoul. Some of his friends teased him about losing the accent but Jimin knew deep down he still had it.
The only thing he wasn’t expecting was for the majority of his friends to have found their soulmates. Jimin had only been gone for six months but now friends he use to meet separately were known as an item. It was weird but he was happy for them. If not a little jealous.
Jimin was the only one who didn’t find his yet. Even his family thought he was coming back home with someone, only to be slightly disappointed when he told them he hadn’t find the one yet.
Jimin knew he shouldn’t but he felt bitter. His friends tried to managed him but they talked a lot about what the world was like with colors in it and well… Jimin could only imagine. His mother always told him that yes the colors were fantastic but what was really unique and extraordinary was the feeling.
The feeling when you see the person. The one destined to you.
His mother says that there is no better feeling in the world.
Jimin wished he could experienced that. He knew some people didn’t find their soulmates before middle age but it was a rare occasion. Every soulmates met during their twenties. His friends proved him so. Jimin was twenty three and he was wondering if his soulmate and him were destined to meet late.
He sighed, shaking his head. He’d gone out so much in Seoul in hope of finding his soulmate there but he was met by disappointment instead. Black and white was so boring when everybody tells you Seoul is beautiful in colors.
But it is how it is. Maybe it wasn’t the right time. Fate hasn’t decided yet.
He was so deep in thought he almost missed the call for his train. He hurriedly moved forward, dragging his suitcase, and chose the closest door. He wanted to sit next to a window, it always relaxed him to see the landscape passing by.
After some shuffling to put his suitcase in the box above his seat, Jimin finally sat. It wasn’t long before the train began to move and brought him back to his shared apartment in Seoul. The ride was three hours long and Jimin was already dozing off. He didn’t even know he was on the verge of falling asleep before he woke up an hour and a half later.
The train was in direction of Daegu’s station.
There were far more people here than there were at Busan’s station. His train stopped right next to the one going back to Busan. It's been awhile since he visited Daegu, the face of Taehyung popped into his mind. His best friend must have come back home during the holiday too. He’ll make sure to call him once he’ll arrive at Seoul.
Jimin rested his head on the window. His respiration was fogging up the glass as he exhaled softly. He closed his eyes, appreciating the cool sensation of the window.
But for some reason, Jimin’s brain forced him to open up his eyes again. It was like instinct, like he needed to keep his eyes open. Before Jimin could freak out, he was meeting the eyes of the person sitting next to him on the opposite train, their head resting on the glass like him.
And suddenly the train was red. The pull the boy was wearing wasn’t black like he believed it was but a deep blue, surely to match the highlight of dark blue in the black hair. His eyes were dark if not black and his lips were rosy.
Jimin’s chest constricted. God, he never felt like that. Like he could not take his eyes off the stranger’s figure. He never wanted to see anything else but the shape of his catlike eyes. He wanted to reach out, to pass through the glass and just settle in the arms of the other boy. He could feel an explosion so loud in his entire body, they felt like actual fireworks, tingling him even to the end of his fingertips.
The stranger looked completely taken aback and, with the last string of Jimin’s sanity, he thought he probably looked very much the same as well.
Everything was colorful and it was so overwhelming but so beautiful. The boy seemed to shuffle to find something to write onto and Jimin realized too late that they just stared at each other dumbfounded and that they didn’t have much time before they would lost sight of each other.
He was right.
The stranger was searching frantically something in his backpack, casting him glances like he knew Jimin would disappear soon. Unfortunately for them, Jimin’s train started to move again and before the stranger could show him what was written down on the paper, Jimin couldn’t see him anymore.
The feeling of losing a piece of himself was horrible. Once he could no longer looked into the boy’s eyes, Jimin felt awful. He wanted the sensation, that traversed his entire body and his soul, back. His mother was so right. Jimin never experienced something like this before.
The ridicule of the situation fully settle ten minutes later when Jimin hysterically laugh to himself.
He met his soulmate.
He met his soulmate for 58 seconds.
Fate finally accorded him to find peace on the subject, just to take everything back.
Jimin decided he was some unlucky bastard.
He also decided fate was a bitch.
彡
‘’You’re kidding me, right?’’ Hoseok asked him. Jimin shook his head defeated. ‘’I swear, I met him and now he’s gone.’’
Jimin returned safely to his apartment and screamed at his roommate to ‘’Listen! You’ll never believe what happened to me!’’
And indeed, Hoseok was looking at him like he insulted his entire family. ‘’You’re telling me you finally found your soulmate just for him to disappear and you never got his name?! Are you even real?’’ Jimin was feeling so numb from the whole thing that he just nodded, his eyes lost somewhere on the houseplant near their window.
‘’Well, damn, that’s really unfortunate.’’ Always count on Hoseok to find the right words. Jimin rolled his eyes before he slumped his body on the couch. ‘’So now what?’’
‘’Guess you’ll have to wait again. I mean you guys met once I’m sure it will happen again. That’s what soulmate are for.’’
‘’But I can see colors now! It’s not going to be that simple. What if I miss him now that the color thing doesn’t work? I wouldn’t know I saw him!’’
Hoseok smiled. ‘’Trust me; you’ll know. When your soulmate is near, you just feel it. Maybe my story wasn’t exactly like yours but every time I’m near Yerin it’s -- I don’t know, I just feel it deep inside.’’
Hoseok met his soulmate a year ago on his way to his dance class. Jimin met Yerin and the girl was nothing but sweet and playful. Her and Hoseok were one of the cutest couple Jimin knew.
Taking in Hoseok’s words, Jimin felt a little better. He still couldn’t believe something like that really happened to him, but the determination of finding his soulmate (again) became stronger than the need to be worried. He still had three days before the second semester began.
Jimin took a breath and decided on the only thing he could think of.
Calling his mess of a best friend.
彡
Taehyung was from Daegu.
The boy was such a social butterfly, Jimin couldn’t even begin to imagine what his phone contacts looked like. But if there is one thing Taehyung excelled in, beside making friends, it was memory. The boy could look at someone once and still remembered it years later.
Jimin’s soulmate was on a train in Busan’s direction. But he took it from Daegu’s station. Jimin thought that maybe, only maybe, the boy was from Daegu.
‘’What do you mean you lost him?’’ Taehyung asked over the phone.
‘’We were in different train, Tae, of course I lost him.’’ Jimin laughed a little. ‘’Did you expect me to jump from my train to go in his?’’
‘’Well yeah!’’ Taehyung stayed silent during two seconds before joining in the laugh. ‘’Still, Chim, I’m sorry this happened to you. I know how long you’ve been waiting.’’
Jimin listened to his best friend and felt such a huge amount of affection toward the boy. They’ve been friends for quite a long time now and Taehyung has been nothing but supportive of Jimin’s dreams and his desire to meet his soulmate. Jimin never thought he would find a friend like Tae in his life but now, he couldn't even begin to imagine what his life would look like without Taehyung in it. ‘’It’s ok, I’m sure everything is meant to happen for a reason.’’ He smiled, feeling better than he did the last past hours.
They talked some more about their families, how school was going to be exhausting and their finals coming up quickly before Taehyung brought back the subject again.
‘’So, you’re telling me the guy is from Daegu?’’
‘’Well, I’m not sure,’’ Jimin answered sheepishly, ‘’but he was at Daegu’s station. His train was going to Busan though.’’
‘’What did he look like?’’
Jimin smiled at the memory. ‘’Man, he’s so beautiful.’’
‘’Ok, calm your horny ass and describe him to me.’’ Jimin felt himself blush and whispered shout a ‘’shut up’’ before collecting himself to respond. ‘’He was very pale, hum, had black hair with like dark highlight.’’ He paused thinking of everything that Taehyung could work with, ‘’Oh! He had catlike eyes.’’
‘’Hum?’’ He heard Taehyung very eloquently asking. ‘’Like the shape?’’
‘’Yep.’’ Jimin said popping the ‘’p’’. ‘’Beside that I don’t really know, I mean he was sitting so I can’t tell you if he’s tall or whatever.’’
‘’Anything else?’’
Jimin tried to remember something useful. ‘’He had thin lips? I mean they weren’t really thin but certainly thinner than you and me and it seemed like he was pouting. It was so cute. And they looked so soft.’’ Even over the phone Jimin could hear Taehyung rolling his eyes. ‘’He wore a dark blue shirt, it looked really big and comfy.’’
There was a silence before Taehyung sighed, a little defeated. ‘’Not gonna lie, Chim, for now I got nothing.’’
‘’It’s ok Tae, don’t stress about it.’’ Jimin could feel Taehyung wanted to say something but the boy seemed to hesitate. Jimin didn’t know why but he knew that if he wanted the question asked he shouldn’t push Taehyung. After a while and some everyday conversation, the boy finally asked. ‘’Is it really true then? It really is magical?’’
Jimin stopped, not really expecting that kind of question. But he understood, Taehyung and him were really similar in their worries. Taehyung was so stressed he wouldn’t find his soulmate. Jimin never believed fate could ever denied a soulmate to Kim Taehyung.
Even if it was one hell of a bitch.
‘’It is, Tae. I’m sure you’ll find out soon.’’ Jimin said, warmly. He meant it. If he succeeded in finding his soulmate then Taehyung would be next.
‘’What about the colors, Chim?’’ Tae asked eagerly.
‘’They’re so incredible! It’s beautiful. It makes you appreciate even the smallest of things.’’
‘’I’m happy for you. Even though this is a shitty situation, I’m glad you found the one.’’
‘’Me too, Tae, me too.’’
彡
It was a month after the semester has started that Jimin took in the reality of the situation.
Taehyung was looking, asking friends from Daegu with Jimin’s description of the boy but none of them could guess who the man was.
Hoseok tried to cheer him up and Jimin saw the effort his hyung invested in order to make him smile but Jimin felt tired. The dread feeling of losing someone important was creeping in his lungs and all he could think about was how he had lost his soulmate forever.
His mother warmed him when he finally called his family. Being apart from his soulmate very early in the relationship could cause the bond the shaken and hurt.
And damn did it hurt. The man was all Jimin could think about but thinking about him hurt even more. It was a vicious circle and Jimin couldn't get out of it. He felt numb and in pain. The kind of pain you can’t soothe, the kind of pain you feel deep from within.
He wanted to see the other boy beautiful eyes again. He wanted to touch his hair that looked so soft. He wanted to kiss those red, pouty lips. He wanted to hold the hands he saw searching endlessly into the bag.
Jimin was sick in a way he couldn't explain.
He just wanted but he couldn’t have. That was the worst feeling in the world if you asked him.
Days were similar and blurred, he felt a discomfort he couldn’t shake off and left him dissatisfied in the worst way possible. Nothing felt really right.
He dyed his hair just for the hell of it. The bright orange color made him smile for a day. But eventually it just reminded him that he could see and not feel.
At some point, even the colors lost their appeal.
彡
Finally, after another month, Taehyung called.
‘’Jimin I found him.’’ Was the only thing Taehyung said before Jimin was out of his apartment, coat in hand.
They met at Seoul’s station. Taehyung told him the guy was from Daegu but after his parents divorced he visited his little brother who was living with his father in Busan. Taehyung apologetically told him that he knew for sure the guy was there and therefore they needed to go by train.
Jimin’s brain was on autopilot, he didn’t care about buying another train ticket, even though tomorrow he had classes to attend and his student budget couldn’t really afford two train tickets in two months. He just didn’t care at the moment. He would cry the loss of his money later.
He told Taehyung that he didn’t have to come with him, feeling bad his best friend would have to cut his budget in the near future to pay his ticket. But Taehyung brushed it off. ‘’Like I’m gonna let you reunite with the love of your life without me.’’ Jimin never hugged the boy so hard.
彡
‘’What’s his name?’’ Jimin thought to ask once they were seated in the train.
‘’Min Yoongi. Apparently he kept his mother’s name but his younger brother didn’t. That’s why I didn’t find him sooner, the name kept changing depending on who I was talking too.’’
Min Yoongi. Yoongi. Jimin could work with that. Unconsciously, he began to smile. It was like hearing the name lifted the sorrow off his shoulders. For the first time in two months, he felt close to contentment.
‘’What’s his brother’s name then?’’ He asked as an afterthought.
‘’Jeon Jungkook.’’ Taehyung made a face. ‘’Damn it sounds good, don’t you think?’’
Jimin didn’t think anything to be honest. Anything that wasn’t how close he was getting to his soulmate.
彡
Jimin, truthfully, felt like a stalker. Taehyung, by some miraculous way, achieved to find the address of his soulmate’s little brother. It was a familiar territory being in Busan and all, Jimin couldn’t believe he was so close to his soulmate all along but chose to look for him in Seoul.
It was nearly nighttime when their train arrived at the station. The sunset was breathtaking and was submerging the sky with pink, peach and soft blue colors. The clouds themselves looked like cotton candy. Jimin loved Busan, always had and always will. But tonight, he could feel how special his hometown was going to be for him.
For them.
Taehyung lead the way, Jimin second mindly following. Tae suddenly stopped in front of a pretty house. The garden at the front had so many types of flowers Jimin could smell them from the street. They approach slowly, and too soon or not fast enough, they were standing in front of the door. Jimin looked expectantly at Taehyung before pressing the doorbell.
They heard commotion in the house, the noise of the tv leisurely faded and footsteps started to come in their direction.
Jimin was expecting for the father or even the little brother to open.
But, after all, fate was a bitch. Or was it?
All the air Jimin had in his lungs flew away once a very familiar boy opened the door. He seemed tired and sad. He wore the exact same expression Jimin faced for two months. He could feel the boy’s sadness and longing.
Then Yoongi’s eyes became huge, like he had a hard time believing everything was true.
‘’H- hi.’’ Jimin tentatively tried to say before two arms were thrown around him and his head was nuzzled in Yoongi’s neck.
‘’It’s you. Oh my god it’s you.’’ Hands were on his hair and Jimin could smell the cologne Yoongi was wearing. It felt good, like coming home. ‘’You’re here,’’ Yoongi kept on whispering to him. ‘’I thought i’d lost you.’’
Jimin felt this amazing feeling again. Like he could stay like that for an eternity and more. Like he wanted to stay just like that. His heart was strangely beating very slowly, like it was at peace. Yeah that was it.
Jimin felt at peace. And suddenly everything was right again.
The colors were bright once more.
‘’Me too.’’ Jimin finally said. He didn’t know for how long they stayed like that but Yoongi’s little brother must have heard something.
‘’Hyung? What’s happening?’’ A voice asked and suddenly stopped. Yoongi's little brother was just staring, not moving whatsoever. Yoongi pulled back from Jimin, lowering his hands to intertwined them with Jimin’s. ‘’Kook-ah what it is?’’ Yoongi pressed, feeling the distress of his little brother.
Jimin felt Taehyung flinched by his side and looked at his best friend. Taehyung looked like he was going to cry. ‘’Tae?’’
‘’Is your hair orange Jimin?’’
‘’Hum, yes, wh--’’ Then it hit him. He looked over at Yoongi’s little brother, who was speechless on his feet. Jimin looked again at Taehyung and the boy was delicately rubbing his eyes. When he finished he smiled.
‘’Hi Jungkook. I’m Taehyung.’’
‘’You’re so beautiful.’’ Jungkook said before he could stop himself and then blushed, making Taehyung laugh. Taehyung walked closer to Jungkook and simply stood beside him, but Jungkook’s expression change into one of satisfaction.
Eventually Yoongi lead them inside and offered them some tea. Jimin couldn’t believe how lucky he got to have find his soulmate again. Taehyung looked radiant next to him and Jimin needed to admit that this Jungkook kid was pretty cute.
And Yoongi. Gosh, Yoongi was one of the most beautiful human being Jimin had ever seen. Talking to him, touching him, felt like something he’d been doing all his life. Jimin never thought he’d became an addict.
But he was definitely addicted to the effect Min Yoongi had on him.
“Wait does that mean we’re all family now?’’ Taehyung shouted at the end of the evening.
彡
‘’Stop fidgeting, Yoongi.’’
‘’I’m nervous, ok?’’
It’s been over four months now that Jimin met his soulmate for the second time. The distance was killing them, Yoongi being in Daegu and Jimin being in Seoul, but they made it work. Jimin sometimes felt himself being lonely and craving Yoongi’s arms around him but he managed.
He caught Yoongi pacing back and forth again.
‘’Yoongi!’’
‘’What? This is a big deal Jimin! It’s your parents!’’
The door opened and Jimin’s mother was now in front of them. There was a silence for a couple of minute before Jimin’s mother squealed.
‘’Oh baby, he’s so handsome!’’ She exclaimed, making Yoongi and Jimin blushed in embarrassment. Yoongi tried to keep up with everything his mother was telling him and he looked adorable. She lead them inside, toward the dinner table where Jimin’s father and little brother waited for them to arrived.
And, yeah, Jimin could say with honesty that it was a good night. His parents loved Yoongi and seemed so happy for them. His little brother kept talking music with Yoongi, both sharing the same tastes and their love for piano.
Jimin was happy.
He felt even happier when Yoongi squeezed his hand under the table and murmured into his ears. ‘’I love your family.’’
Jimin's smile at that very moment could rival the sun in Yoongi’s opinion.
彡
Jimin was passing around in his apartment. He was alone in it now. Hoseok and Yerin moved together some time ago. Hoseok looked kind of guilty when he announced the news to Jimin. But the boy was so happy for his friend he didn’t mind.
But, Jimin admitted that without the loud and happy presence of his friend. The apartment was lonely.
He was dancing to some Big Bang song when he heard a knock on the door. He didn’t expect anyone.
‘’Did you forget something again, hyung?’’ He guessed Hoseok was the one behind the door but that wasn’t the case. Yoongi was standing there, smile already forming on his lips.
Jimin refrained the happy scream he almost let out. ‘’We need to stop meeting like this.’’ He joked. Yoongi chuckled before stepping inside the apartment.
When he closed the door, Yoongi was against him in a second. ‘’It’s been so long.’’ Yoongi said before pressing his lips to his own. Jimin never thought much of kisses until he met Yoongi. The man knew what he was doing and what he wanted and just took. Jimin was more than happy to oblige.
Yoongi’s lips were soft and his teeth kept biting into his lower lips. It was hot and soft at the same time. Jimin loved the feeling. His hands found their way into Yoong’s hair and Jimin deepened the kiss because Yoongi was right it’s been too long.
When they separated, Jimin stared at Yoongi in awe his hands still in the man’s hair. They were no longer black and blue but a soft brown. Jimin was always amazed by how beautiful Yoongi was. And he was all his.
‘’Wanna watch a movie and cuddle?’’
‘’Yes please.” Yoongi laughed and let himself be pushed on the couch.
They settled for a ghibli movie.
And if they never finished the movie because they couldn’t keep their hands to themselves then nobody had to know.
彡
The next morning, Jimin woke up with a hand in his hair, playing with the orange strands. Yoongi was staring at the ceiling, already awake.
‘’Hey you.’’ Jimin greeted.
Yoongi smiled and closed his eyes, like he was appreciating the sound of his voice. ‘’Hey yourself.’’
They didn’t leave the bed right away, enjoying the warmth of their cocoon and the presence of the other. Jimin was about to go and make food when Yoongi talked.
‘’Min, can I asked you something?’’
Turning toward Yoongi, Jimin nodded.
‘’What do you think about a roommate?”
Jimin only glanced at him. He wasn’t expecting that kind of question.
‘’Well, Hoseok’s room is still empty so I guess they would have space?’’ His answer sounded more like a question even to himself.
Yoongi smirked, amused by his response. ‘’What do you think about me being your roommate?”
Ok. What?
Taking Jimin’s silence as key to continue Yoongi resumed. ‘’I told you about my friend Namjoon, yeah? Well he managed to rent a studio in Seoul and he asked me if I wanted to come and finish my study here in Seoul.’’
Jimin was still silent.
‘’Sunshine say something please you’re scaring me a little bit.’’
Jimin finally snapped out of it and sat on Yoongi’s laps, placing his hands on the boy’s cheeks. ‘’Are you serious?’’
“As serious as I can be.’’ Was the answer he received. He couldn’t believe it. Were the months of being apart really over? He removed his hands and kissed each cheeks excitedly, then his nose, then his forehead and finally he placed a peck on his lips. Yoongi was giggling and it was one the cutest thing. ‘’Do I take that as a yes?’’
‘’Yes! Yes please.’’
And maybe they didn’t leave the bed at all before the hunger was too much to bear.
And maybe after two weeks Yoongi finally moved in.
And maybe after years of being together, even though their soulmate bond was enough, Jimin still proposed to Yoongi.
And maybe some years later, after they moved to a nice house, they brought back home a tiny little addition into their family. She would wake them up at night crying to be fed, but she also would make their day shine like no color could when she laughed and smiled at them.
Jimin didn’t think he was an unlucky bastard anymore. Oh no, he was one hell of a lucky man.
Eventually, Jimin made peace with fate.
Because if it brought him this much, maybe it was worth the journey.
