Work Text:

Ginny walked alone with Luna across the Hogwarts grounds. It was a remarkably pleasant early spring Saturday, and sharing it with Luna was filling Ginny’s heart with joy.

“I wonder what Harry is up to,” Ginny said.

Luna turned to Ginny and said, “Are you worried about him?”

“No. He can take care of himself, but… I do miss him,” Ginny said.

Luna looked at Ginny with curiosity. “What is it?”

Ginny said, “Hmm?”

“There’s something else, isn’t there?”

Ginny stopped and sighed. “Yes. I’m just wondering. Harry and I made a deal. Well, not really a deal. An agreement.”

“Is there a difference between an agreement and a deal?”

“I think so. We agreed that we could… see other people while he’s traveling. I’m just wondering if he’s been with anyone else?” She’s wondering not from jealous but because she’s had her eye on someone else for some time now. She looks into Luna’s eyes. She didn’t think anyone saw Luna the way she did. As far as Ginny was concerned Luna was the prettiest girl at Hogwarts.

“Are you afraid of him finding someone else?” Luna said this and looked up at the sky, Ginny not sure what, if anything, she was looking for.

“No. I just wish I knew.”

“Is it because there’s someone you fancy?” Her eyes remained on the blue skies, but she was smiling.

“What? What makes you say that?”

The smile faded from Luna, and she lowered her head and looked at Ginny. “I remember what you were like when you were crushing on Harry. Only you at least talked about it then. Now you aren’t saying a word.”

As dreamy as Luna could be, she was exceptionally perceptive at times. Bloody Ravenclaw.

“Fine. I do have a crush, and I guess I’m afraid of… making the first move. If Harry is with someone first, then I won’t feel guilty.”

Luna tilted her head a little, furrowing her brow. “Why would you feel guilty?”

“Because it’s not a new crush, Luna. It’s an old one. And it’s… mad anyway. For so many reasons.” Ginny momentarily avoided Luna’s eyes.

“Is it on a girl?”

Ginny’s mouth hung open. “A girl?”

Luna’s oddly shaped mouth curled into a half-smirk. “There’s nothing wrong with it. I like girls too.”

Ginny's insides were suddenly filled with butterflies. “You do?”

“Doesn’t everyone? Girls are so pretty and nice.” Luna smiled and rocked a little.

“I don’t think everyone does. At least not like that. Some only like one or the other.”

“Well, I like everyone.”

“You’re bisexual?”

Luna shrugged. “I’m just Luna.”

Ginny summoned her Gryffindor strength and said, “I’m bisexual. I think. No… I know. I am.”

Luna looked at Ginny, grinning. “I’m happy for you.”

“Luna… It’s you. My crush. I have a crush on you.”

“I know. I just wanted you to say. You look at me just like you look at Harry Potter.”

Ginny knew she shouldn’t be surprised, but she was. “Luna, you are amazing.”

“Thank you, Ginny.”

Ginny took a deep breath and said, “Ginny, are you… interested? In me? In anyone.”

Luna approached Ginny, getting close. Up clos,e their height difference was a little more obvious, Luna being half a head taller, though that was mostly because Ginny was so short herself. Luna smelled like raspberries and cinnamon. “I’m interested in a lot of people, but you… most of all. Do you want to kiss me?”

Ginny looked around. No one was watching, and few were even close enough. Besides, it wasn’t illegal for two girls to kiss. Who would care? And if anyone did care, well, they could shove off.

“Yes, I absolutely want to kiss you.” Ginny closed her eyes and parted her lips; Luna’s lips soon pressed into hers. They held for a moment before letting them glide softly together, before pulling apart. It was different than snogging Harry. Not better or worse. Ginny still looked around to see who might’ve seen, not out of fear but because she was ready to kick anyone’s arse who might be offended.

Ginny said, “So, what does this mean?”

“What do you want it to mean?”

Ginny smiled and shook her head. “I guess I want to date you. And maybe if we like dating then… we’d be girlfriends.”

“I’d like that.”

Ginny put a hand on Luna’s cheek, brushing a strand of her dirty blonde hair out of her eyes. She kissed Luna again, longer, deeper this time. Luna made a happy sound as they pulled apart. Luna said, “I really love it when we do that.”

“Me too. Luna, what do you say we go on our first date tonight to Hogsmeade?”

“You’re not afraid?”

Ginny held Luna’s hands. “No. They’re the ones that should be afraid if they dare judge us.”

They kissed one more time before carrying on with their day. Tonight, Ginny was going to write Harry a letter. She wanted Harry to find what she had. Something sweet. Something beautiful.
