Chapter 1: A Second Chance

Chapter Text

Izuku had died. He knew that he died, and he didn’t regret for a single second dying in the process of protecting someone. So, why…?

The moment after he died, all he saw was darkness, but, then, his sight was bombarded by a bright light.

“Congratulations! It’s a boy!” Izuku heard. He suddenly became overly aware of how small he was, and he couldn’t seem to stop himself from crying.

He sobbed as he was transferred from the doctor’s arms to his mother’s. Inko smiled down at him, and it was almost a relief to see her, even if she looked absolutely exhausted.

“What do you want to name him?” The doctor asked. Inko responded immediately.

“Izuku. Midoriya Izuku.” Inko smiled down at Izuku, and her gaze was just so full of love and affection that Izuku started crying again.

Soon, they made their way home.

Okay, Izuku needed to analyze his situation. First, he needed to go over what he knew. The facts.

It seemed like he was reliving his birth, not that he actually remembered what his birth was like. He was a baby who just got out of the womb. He could barely talk, much less anything else.

But why? Did he get hit by someone else’s quirk? No, he knew the quirks of everyone around him at the time, so he knew that it couldn’t have been someone else’s quirk.

Was… was it possible that he actually had a quirk? Maybe it was a hidden quirk that only showed itself when he died?

It was probably wishful thinking, that he actually had a quirk this entire time. But, if it was, that means that his quirk was something like a ‘Second Chance.’

Whatever it was, whether it was someone else’s quirk or the possibility of it being his own, he was given a second chance at… life, he guessed.

A second chance at being a hero.

With that realization, Izuku made it his goal to work even harder in this life than he did in the previous one. He will become a hero.

He befriended Bakugou again. Izuku hoped that maybe, just maybe, Kacchan and him could be friends again. Maybe he wouldn’t be bullied this time.

He was wrong, of course, Bakugou was just as fiery and full of sharp edges as he was in Izuku’s past life.

“Deku means useless! So, you’re Deku because you’re useless and always will be!” Bakugou said, and, even if Izuku had already gotten used to the nickname, it still hurt. But, this time, Izuku had a come back.

“...But doesn’t it also sound like ‘You can do it’?” Izuku asked. “I can’t be useless if I can do it! Right, Kacchan?”

“I mean, I guess.” Bakugou was still glaring at Izuku.

At least the bullying was less because of the fighting moves Izuku learned in his past life. It allowed him to stand up to Bakugou more often.

Izuku still didn’t develop a quirk in this lifetime, but that was to be expected. He tried to use One for All, but, of course, it wasn’t there. He was just as quirkless as his last life, except maybe not.

Because, when he went to the doctor, he didn’t have the extra joint in his pinky toe. It was confirmed that he had a quirk.

“But Izuku’s quirk hasn’t developed yet.” Inko worried. “Are you sure?”

“If he was quirkless, then he would have an extra joint in his pinky toe, but he doesn’t.” The doctor explained.

“Um…” Izuku swung his legs back and forth. “I think I know what my quirk is.”

“Izuku! You never told me!” Inko said. “What is it? I would think you would be so excited about finding out what your quirk is that you would tell me immediately.”

“I, I think it might be a resurrection quirk of the sort.” Izuku mumbled. “I don’t know what it is exactly, but I’ve been calling it Second Chance.”

“A resurrection quirk? That’s certainly rare. What makes you think it’s a resurrection quirk?” The doctor questioned, look at Izuku very intently.

“Well, I, I…” Izuku frowned, unsure of whether or not he should actually say anything. Was there a timeline to worry about? But so many things were already different, so he guesses it doesn’t matter that much. “I died, and I came back.”

“Died!?” Inko exclaimed. “What? When? When did that happen? Oh, my goodness.”

Inko looked like she was about to pass out.

“No, no!!” Izuku immediately said. “Like, I lived my life to adulthood, and I became a top hero. And, I died trying to save someone. And then it was like I was given a second chance at life when I was born again, so…”

“I’ve never heard of anyone with a quirk like that.” The doctor mentioned.

“I don’t know if it works more than once.” Izuku said. “Or if I just have to die a certain way to activate it, but I don’t think it was someone else’s quirk.”

“So, what you’re telling me is that you remember everything in your past life?” The doctor questioned.

“I guess so.” Izuku admitted.

Inko was worried about Izuku. He knew it. It might have been the reason why he didn’t tell her anything.

But Inko also didn’t accuse him of withholding information from her, even while she was visibly upset.

“...So you became a top hero in your past life?” Inko asked when they were going back home.

“I did.”

That made Inko smile in a way that was sad and proud and happy all at once. She even had the beginnings of tears threatening to fall.

“I’m glad you were able to achieve your dream. I have no doubt that you’ll be able to achieve it this time around too.”

Izuku didn’t have any doubts either. In fact, he put nearly all of his energy into training for the future, keeping in mind that his body was still growing, so he should keep any intense training to a minimum.

It was kind of difficult when thinking about how many years he had left to be able to get into UA. His last life had been so long, so he guessed the days seemed shorter, so the years went by faster.

Inko helped keep him in check with her frequent worrying. She was very insistent on making sure that Izuku didn’t hurt himself.

Izuku did manage to create a schedule that wasn’t too harsh that his mother was okay with. It mostly involved morning runs and small strength exercises. Inko, of course, made plenty of food for Izuku to keep up with his development, and she supported him Plus Ultra!

Izuku was going to become a hero once again.
