Work Text:
Jimin really didn’t like hospitals and avoided them with a passion, maybe that was why he was now stuck in one. Jimin was running a high fever and felt terrible. He kept coughing and each time this weird icky stuff would come out of his mouth, as such he made sure to keep the tissues close by. What sucked more then the icky stuff coming out of his mouth was the fact that it freaking hurt to breathe much less cough. Honestly, Jimin was feeling so horrible, he would probably give anything to not be in this situation anymore. Thankfully though, his pain meds were starting to kick in and the pain was lessening.
Pneumonia is what the doctor had called it. She’d also claimed he had a very bad strain of it and that it would take quite a few doses of antibiotics to cure it. As such Jimin was stuck in the hospital, lying in bed, and being miserable. Well at least he wasn’t hooked up to any machines, Jimin thought to himself. He groaned as someone knocked on his door before opening it and coming in. Jimin peeked out from under the blanket to see his best friend, Taehyung, come into the room with a gift bag in hand.
“Hey there Jiminie heard you got sent to the hospital from work” Taehyung chirped in a light tone but Jimin could see the worry on the other’s face.
“I’m alright Taetae, the doctor’s checked on me and said I just had pneumonia,” Jimin answered removing the blankets from his face to give a reassuring smile to Taehyung. Taehyung just pressed his lips together and nodded.
“Well, you did say you were feeling bad all week, and you’ve been avoiding going to the doctors for so long so I guess that’s why you’re stuck here now.” Taehyung teased pinching Jimin’s left cheek playfully. Jimin just whined and swatted his hand away.
“Don’t tease...I’m sick.” Jimin pouted and then eyed the bag in the younger’s hand and asked, “What’s in there?”
“Oh! Treats and get well presents from all our coworkers and friends!” Taehyung replied as he opened the bag to let Jimin have a peek inside.
“Ohhh are those Pepero?” Jimin questioned reaching inside the bag to pull out a box.
“Yep, that’s from by boyfriend and me since we know you love those. We got you a whole bunch of them”
“Aww, you two are so sweet. Thank Hoseok for me!”
“Will do! But put those back! I know you’re not supposed to be eating any solids right now!” Taehyung said snatching back the box of Pepero from Jimin and placing it back in the bag. Then Taehyung set the bag aside and away from Jimin’s reach. Jimin made faces at Taehyung to show his contempt for being denied the snack but Taehyung just chuckled at him.
The younger stayed for a bit just talking to Jimin to keep the elder entertained. Taehyung’s playful mood eventually caused Jimin to become playful too despite how sick he was. He suddenly decided he wanted to make a pillow fort as he was fluffing his pillow. So Taehyung, being the greatest friend in the whole wide world, managed to convince one of the nurses to grab a bunch of extra pillows for Jimin. Together they built a fort on the bed for Jimin to hide under.
“Thanks, Tae, you’re the best!” Jimin chirped as he looked at his pillow fort which turned out nicely. Taehyung laughed and patted Jimin’s head saying “Anytime Jiminie.” After that, Taehyung reluctantly left as he had a meeting to attend and couldn’t miss it. Jimin waved goodbye to him and then proceeded to destroy his pillow fort and build it again on his own since he had nothing better to do. The once great pillow fort was now just a mountain of pillows.
“I shouldn’t have taken it apart in the first place,” Jimin said to himself pouting at the pillows. There was a knock on his door and Jimin wondered if maybe Taehyung was back, though that was unlikely seeing as it hadn’t even been thirty minutes since he’d left, and meetings tended to last much longer than that.
The door opened to reveal a rather young looking nurse who was tall, had fluffy black hair, chiseled chin, nice cheekbones, and a bunny smile. And if Jimin wasn’t sick or at the hospital, he would have probably hit on the nurse. The nurse entered the room with a cart full of different medical equipment. Upon seeing the cart, Jimin dived under all his pillows and stayed put as he waited for the nurse to come to a stop and speak.
“Hello, I’m Jungkook, I’m going to be your nurse for the rest of your stay here, and right now it’s time to take your vitals. So if you could please come out from there, I’d greatly appreciate it” Jungkook introduced himself and what he was there for. Jimin made no sound from beneath his mountain of pillows.
“Jimin-shi? Please come out, I need to take your vitals.” The young nurse tried again. This time Jimin let out a muffled reply of “Fight me!”
Jimin heard the other let out a small chuckle before the pillows were being removed from over him and he soon came face to face with his nurse who smiled sweetly at him.
“Maybe later,” Jungkook answered as he helped Jimin sit up. He then grabbed the blood pressure cuff and gently applied it to Jimin’s arm to take the reading.
“So Jimin-shi how did you end up with pneumonia?” Jungkook asked.
“I don’t know...it started as just a cough and so took cough medicine. But the medicine didn’t work, but I didn’t go to the doctor cause I hate hospitals, and so it built up I guess and now I’m here.” Jimin replied with a sigh.
“I see, what do you have against hospitals though?” Jungkook asked curiously eyeing Jimin.
“Nothing really...I mean they help the sick so that’s a good thing...but I just don’t like them. Maybe it’s something about how everything smells like disinfectant?” Jimin mused with a small frown.
“Oh, but it’s necessary to keep viruses from spreading from patient to patient.”
“I know, I’m not saying it’s bad. I just don’t like it.”
“Fair enough. So how long has it been since you had a proper checkup?” Jungkook continued as he pulled out a small needle to get a blood sample from Jimin. Jimin tensed up because he didn’t like needles. Jungkook noticed and smiled reassuringly.
“Relax, I’m a trained professional and I’ve been doing this for years. It won’t take me more than one try to find a vein. Promise.” Jungkook said.
“Promise?” Jimin asked again wanting to make sure.
“Promise.” Jungkook nodded.
“Ok...but you’ll have to fight me to try again if you fail this time.” Jimin declared holding his arm out. Jungkook let out a small laugh and nodded before feeling along Jimin’s toned arm. Once he found what he was looking for he looked into Jimin’s eyes a silent question and Jimin nodded while biting his lip.
“Relax Jimin-shi, I promise the pain will only last a second,” Jungkook said and once he felt Jimin relax a bit he stuck the small needle into his arm. Jimin let out a small yelp but otherwise didn’t do much else. Jungkook quickly took the blood sample and removed the needle and applied a bandaid.
“Good job, see it wasn’t to bad right?” Jungkook asked smiling brightly as he brought out a thermometer to get Jimin’s temperature.
“It wasn’t...but I still hate needles,” Jimin said and Jungkook laughed again.
The two continued to made small talk as Jungkook worked on checking Jimin’s heartbeat and respiration among other things. Jimin eventually learned he was older then Jungkook and so he told Jungkook to call him hyung which the younger complied to. Once Jungkook was finished he put away the medical instruments he had used. As Jungkook was doing that Jimin dived back into his pillows and Jungkook decided to help him build his fort again. Jimin smiled in thanks as he hid in his small pillow fort. Jungkook smiled back promising to come back later to check on him.
The next time Jungkook came in to check on him as well as deliver lunch, Jimin was laying in bed because he had used up all his energy that morning and was now just feeling miserable once again. And it hurt to move again but his doctor was a meanie who said Jimin had to wait for another dose of pain medication. Jimin was so tired and it hurt so much that Jimin didn’t even have the strength to move around. So Jungkook helped Jimin to sit up and leaned him against the headboard. Then the black haired male took a seat beside the bed and grabbed the spoon slowly bringing it to Jimin’s mouth. But Jimin stopped him by speaking up.
“I can eat by myself.” Jimin protested.
“There’s no need. I can tell you’re tired and as your nurse, I should help you in any way I can. That includes feeding you. And I really don’t mind doing this” Jungkook reassured bringing the spoon close to Jimin’s lips again but Jimin shook his head venomously.
“Nooo! You have to fight me to feed me!” Jimin said raising his arms in self-defense but they were unsteady and it kind of hurt his chest to move so much so he put them back down. Jungkook chuckled again and shook his head. “Not now. We’ll see about later. Now let me feed you.” Jungkook said smiling at Jimin who reluctantly opened his mouth and ate the porridge.
“It’s too hot.” Jimin pouted as he motioned towards the water. Jungkook took the water and held the straw up to Jimin’s mouth letting the elder sip on it.
“Sorry, I should have checked,” Jungkook said apologetically. Once Jimin released the straw, Jungkook set the water back down and got another spoonful of porridge. He blew on it softly and then held it out to Jimin who took it and hummed indicating it was ok this time. Jungkook fed Jimin until all the food was finished. After wiping his lips and helping him lay back down, Jungkook left and Jimin fell asleep.
Later in the evening, the doctor stopped by to check on Jimin and give him more medicine. Jimin took the medicine and went back to sleep since it made him drowsy. He was only semi-awake when it was dinnertime and so Jungkook fed him again. Jimin, in his semi-conscious state, made the other laugh with his terrible jokes and constant rambling.
“No more fooooddd” Jimin pouted turning his head away from the spoon and causing Jungkook to chuckle.
“But hyungg you need to eat to gain your energy back” Jungkook responded.
“Food is bad. Makes me fat” Jimin continued to pout barely aware of what he was saying.
“You’re not fat hyung. I’ve seen your abs.”
“Hmph, so what?”
“Sooo you’re not fat. But you are short.” Jungkook teased.
“Yah so mean. Jungkookie is a meanie!” Jimin’s pouting increased as Jungkook fed him another bite of food.
“Oh my god, why are you being so cute right now? Is the medicine really making you this loopy or are you normally like this?”
“I’m not cuteee! I’m manly!!”
“Whatever you say hyung.” Jungkook responded with an affectionate smile.
“You’re cute. You smile like a bunny!”
“Do I now?”
“Yesss! I love bunnies! And your smile! Bunny smile!” Jimin cheered as he took the bite Jungkook offered him.
“So you like me?” Jungkook asked smile widening.
“Yep! Jungkookie is pretty and cute and muscular and manly and sexy and he has a bunny smile!” Jimin replied with a toothy grin and Jungkook broke out into another bout of laughter.
“This is too good, you’re too precious hyung. I want to record this so bad.” Jungkook said.
“Record~ Record~ Record~” Jimin began repeating the word in a singsongy voice causing Jungkook to laugh even more as he fed Jimin a couple more bites.
“It’s so sad to think you’ll probably forget about all this in the morning,” Jungkook said sighing but was still smiling.
The next morning Jimin was feeling better except for the coughing fits that kept coming. He only vaguely recalled what happened last night when Jungkook came to feed him, but it was enough for him to be embarrassed. Jungkook came in the early morning to take Jimin’s vitals. Jimin hid under the blankets and was about to say ‘fight me’ when Jungkook told him he was there to take the elder’s vitals again, but ended up having a coughing fit. Jungkook pulled the blankets away and rubbed his back gently until the coughs subsided and then handed him a tissue. Jimin wiped his mouth and threw the tissue into the small trashcan beside him.
“Fight me,” Jimin said weakly as Jungkook brought the thermometer out to take his temperature. Jungkook smiled softly at Jimin before shaking his head.
“I won’t, I know you’d win.” Jungkook replied before he began taking Jimin’s blood pressure.
“You don’t know that”
“Actually I’m pretty sure I do.”
“Hmm…”
“So...how are you this morning?”
“It’s ok, I’m not loopy like I was last night.”
“Last night was funny.” Jungkook said laughing and Jimin pouted.
“Do you remember any of it?” Jungkook asked.
“Not all of it...anyway I feel much better except for when I cough.”
“Ah I see, but you’re getting better so it’s a good thing. How much longer do you think you’ll be here?”
“The doctor said I could probably leave tomorrow if I promise to take my antibiotics regularly”
“Aww, leaving me so soon?” Jungkook joked with a teasing smile.
“Seems so.” Jimin smiled back giggling as Jungkook took his temperature.
“Hmm well is there anything you need right now?”
“Nope,” Jimin responded.
“Alright, well let someone know if you do need something. We’re all here to help you get better.” Jungkook responded as he finished getting Jimin’s vitals. Jimin nodded and watched Jungkook leave. He was grateful the other had decided not to bring up exactly what Jimin had said yesterday night. Jimin felt his cheeks heat up recalling how he’d basically hit on Jungkook, but was happy that Jungkook hadn’t been put off by it. Maybe he had a chance?
The day went by too slowly for Jimin’s liking. He was so bored and wished he had company. Thankfully when it was lunch time Jungkook stayed with him and kept him company even though Jimin didn’t need the younger to feed him this time.
“You’ve gained the color back in your cheeks.” Jungkook commented reaching out and patting Jimin’s cheek while the other ate. Jimin blushed slightly and said nothing which just made Jungkook laugh.
“Why are you so cute hyung?” Jungkook questioned.
“Yah! I thought we established this yesterday, I’m not cute!! I’m manly!” Jimin whined glaring at Jungkook who just continued to laugh.
“But you’re so small hyung, and small things are cute.” Jungkook stated ruffling Jimin’s hair.
“I’m not cute!” Jimin continued to deny.
“Yes, you are!” Jungkook argued with a huge smile.
“Fight me!” Jimin demanded and Jungkook just shook his head.
“I already said I’d lose.” Jungkook responded and Jimin just huffed. The two continued to talk as Jimin finished his food. Once he was done, Jungkook left. Later in the evening, Jimin’s friends stopped by to see him and he was once again relieved of his boredom. Jungkook visited again to take his vitals after Jimin ate dinner and the two talked and playfully bantered as if they’d known each other for years.
The next morning Jimin didn’t get to see Jungkook as instead it was the doctor who stopped by to take his vitals and deliver breakfast. The doctor informed Jimin he was well enough to go home and so Jimin called Taehyung to have the younger bring him a change of clothes and drop him off at home. Taehyung said he’d be there in a couple of hours. Jungkook stopped by a few minutes after the doctor left with Jimin’s medicine.
“I heard you’re being released today.” The younger said smiling while handing Jimin the cup.
“Yep!” Jimin said happily. “I’m feeling much better!”
“That’s good...so anything I can get you before you leave?” Jungkook asked.
“No...though I really wish I could have some coffee.” Jimin said with a sigh before popping the pills into his mouth and washing it down with water.
“Coffee?”
“Yea. I usually drink coffee in the morning.”
“Oh, I see. Are you not allowed to right now?”
“I don’t know? I didn’t ask.”
“Maybe you should then.” Jungkook said as he began putting the medical equipment away.
“Yea, I’ll ask when the doctor when he comes back. He said he would take one last look before I left” Jimin replied.
Jungkook stayed a bit longer and so they talked. They found out they had a lot of similar interests and hobbies. After ten minutes the younger had to leave to attend to another patient, so he left and Jimin just lay in bed bored while waiting for Taehyung to come.
Later that morning, about twenty minutes before Jimin got a text from Taehyung saying he was on his way, Jungkook came back in but this time he didn’t have the cart with him instead he had a steaming cup of coffee with him. He placed it on the table in front of Jimin and said, “A little gift for you, since you mentioned you wanted coffee. Make sure to wait for it to cool down first.” After saying that the black haired male left. Jimin stared at the cup puzzled but blew at it anyway before taking a small sip. He relished in the taste of coffee and smiled to himself, thankful to Jungkook. As he finished the cup he noticed some writing on the side. Jimin finished the coffee and then focused on the writing and was baffled to see ‘Fight me? Xxx-xxx-xxxx’ written on the side of the cup.
Jimin smiled to himself as he realized that Jungkook had left his number on the cup. Looks like he managed to somehow capture Jungkook’s heart with his drool and terrible lungs. When Jungkook came into the room again with a cart a couple minutes later for Jimin’s final vitals check before he was picked up, Jimin reached up and pulled Jungkook down by the shirt to his level. Then he promptly placed a small kiss on the other’s cheek and said “I accept your challenge”, which only brought a beautiful bunny smile to Jungkook’s face as he leaned forward and planted a kiss on Jimin’s cheek nodding in happiness.
