Summertime

Summary:

"Daegu is so nice, hyungnim." Jungkook says happily, "Will you take me to the summer festival tomorrow?"

Yoongi doesn't even hesitate, "We'll go wherever you want, baby."

Yoongi does not usually attend the summer festivals. It's too hot, the sun shines too brightly, there are too many people-

-but Jungkook is smiling hopefully, and Yoongi is a weak, weak man.

Besides, he's sure he'll enjoy himself if he's got Jungkook with him.

OR

Yoongi and Jungkook spend summer together in Daegu.

Chapter Text

The heat is almost unbearable.

The sun is shining a little too brightly, and the cool breeze of spring is long gone.

"Fucking summer." Yoongi mutters, "It's always so hot and everyone gets so sweaty, and we have to fucking pack all of our things into two tiny suitcases-"

"Hyung, stop complaining." Jungkook rolls his eyes, "And stop pretending you're unhappy. You've been counting the days on your phone calender. Don't pretend you haven't."

"How did you even know that?" Yoongi snaps, while Seokjin hoots with laughter.

"I have my ways."

"You little shit." Yoongi reaches out to shove him, but then changes his mind when he realizes it's too much effort, "Fuck, it's way too hot."

"It's probably because I'm here." Jungkook says, managing to keep his face perfectly straight.

"Dear lord, you've been spending too much time with Seokjin hyung." Yoongi says in disbelief, "Keep a watch on that ego."

"What ego?" Jungkook asks innocently, and Yoongi snorts.

"I've taught him well." Seokjin says, all faux pride and fond smiles, "And he's already packed, Yoongi-ah. Why are you so inefficient?"

"We're leaving in three days. I don't understand why I have to pack so early."

"Because I said so." Jungkook says, and Yoongi really can't argue with that.

"Are you excited to meet Yoongi's family?" Seokjin asks, "They're very nice. You'll like them."

"I'm excited." Jungkook pauses, "And scared shitless, but, yeah."

"Why?"

"I mean." Jungkook quirked an eyebrow, "I'm meeting hyungnim's family. I'm staying there for, like, a month. My own family doesn't want me at home, it'll be quite easy for another family to kick me out, too."

"Don't say things like that, baby." Yoongi says soothingly, running his thumb over Jungkook soft cheek, "They already love you. They're more excited to see you than me. And if anyone tries to 'kick you out', as you put it- not that they will- we will be coming straight back here because that means nobody is good enough for your presence."

"Oh." Jungkook's cheeks are pink, and he's doing that thing where he regards Yoongi with wide, starry eyes. Yoongi loves him.

"If you two are done being gross and cute." Seokjin says, "We have a movie to catch."

"Hyung's so lucky he graduated." Jungkook grumbles, "You never have to study again in my life."

"I'l probably start my Master's next year, Jungkookie." Seokjin retorts, "We'll see who's complaining then."

"Ugh." Jungkook ignores this comment, "After the movie, will you drop me off at the staff quarters? I need to speak to my scholarship sponsor person."

"Why?" Yoongi is immediately on alert.

"No big deal, hyung-nim. It's just that usually second-years leave the dorms to stay in an apartment. But since I don't have money, I'll be continuing in the dorms."

"Your scholarship includes housing, right?"

"Yeah." Jungkook looks fond, "Mingyu was all for moving into an apartment, and he wanted me to move in with him, but since I'm broke, I can't. He said I wouldn't have to pay rent, he'll take care of it, but-"

"-you should have agreed!" Yoongi says.

Jungkook shakes his head, "Hyung, I can't just put that kind of burden on him. But being the idiot he is, he decided to do something even dumber than paying my rent- he decided that he's not renting an apartment at all. He's staying in the dorms to room with me again. So I don't have to go through feeling uncomfortable with a new person." he explains, "Plus, we really wanted to room together for some more time. So he decided to stay with me."

"Kim Mingyu is a wonderful human being." Yoongi says, completely serious. He feels grateful to Mingyu for taking care of Jungkook when Yoongi himself is unable to step in. He's glad Jungkook has made a good choice of friends.

"That's really nice of him." Seokjin agrees, "It wouldn't have been easy for you to adjust to a whole new roommate, especially when you and Mingyu are so close."

"He's such an idiot." Jungkook says, though his smile says otherwise, "I don't know what I'd do without him."

Yoongi smiles, too, "Well, I wish you could move into an apartment. I could-"

"-no, hyung."

"I have enough money to-"

"-hyung-nim, you are not going to pay rent for an apartment for me until I finish college." Jungkook says firmly. However, he does lean in to give Yoongi a shy kiss, probably as a thank you for the concern.

"Okay, we're leaving in ten minutes." Seokjin says, "Enough PDA, finish packing, Yoongi. I'll be in the living room."

Yoongi watches as Seokjin leaves. Jungkook is already getting to work, folding Yoongi's clothes and rearranging them neatly in the suitcase.

"You're so messy, Yoongi-hyung. If you just sorted a bit better, you'd have been finished sooner. You really shouldn't need my help with- mmph!"

Yoongi has wrapped his arm around Jungkook's waist, pulling him close and kissing him roughly. Jungkook settles down on his lap, tilting his head to kiss back. They stay like that for a few moment, lips moving against each other, Yoongi swallowing all of Jungkook's little pleased noises, until Jungkook pulls away, lips red and shiny.

"Hyung."he giggles, "We have a movie. And you have to pack."

"You're too cute for your own good." Yoongi responds, and Jungkook giggles again, rubbing their noses together.

"Awww." they both whip around to see Seokjin standing at the doorway.

"Hyung!" Jungkook turns ten shades of red, practically falling out of Yoongi's lap.

"You said ten minutes, what the fuck?" Yoongi gripes. Seokjin is unamused.

"I came to see if you'd need help with finishing the packing, seeing as you're so slow." he snorts, "Plus, I didn't think you'd get any work done if Kook's here- you'd be too busy staring at his ass."

"Hey!" Jungkook whines.

"You do have a nice ass, babe." Yoongi says absently, "But anyway, Jin hyung, I'll pack afterwards. Kook will be with his counsellor anyway. I won't get distracted."

Seokjin sighs, "Fine. You're hopeless, anyway. We should get going."

Jungkook nods, looking over at Yoongi and lacing their fingers together shyly.

Yoongi smiles and squeezes the younger boy's hand.

"Let's go, then."

***

"I'm going to miss you!" Jungkook wails, as Seokjin pushes his suitcases towards the front door, a couple of days later.

"Aww, I'm going to miss you, too, Kook." Seokjin says, ruffling the boy's hair, "But I'll see you soon."

"Two fucking months." Jungkook whines, "I want to see hyung tomorrow!"

"Watch your mouth." Namjoon says in amusement, but Jungkook just lets out another whine and buries his face into Seokjin's neck. Seokjin coos.

"I'll see you even before that. I told you about last summer, right, how we all went to Tae's village for a week together?"

Jungkook's response is muffled. Yoongi supposes he sais 'yes'.

"Well, you know we're planning to go again this summer, the seven of us. That means I'll see you in Daegu really soon."

This prospect seems to cheer Jungkook up considerably, but he still won't detatch himself from Seokjin. Yoongi is half afraid that Seokjin might start tearing up, because the eldest really did have a soft spot for Jungkook. Though they'd known each other for less than a year, Jungkook was already Seokjin's beloved baby brother. Seokjin absolutely adores the maknae.

"C'mon, Kookie." Jimin says gently, prying Jungkook away, "If you don't let go, hyung might miss his train."

Yoongi can see the wheels turning in Jungkook's head. He steps forward immediately.

"I hope you're not planning on making hyung miss the train." he says pleasantly, and Jungkook scowls.

"Shut up, hyung."

Seokjin discretely swipes at his eyes- Yoongi was right- and gives Jungkook another tight hug.

"I'll call often, okay? You'll have a great time with Yoongi's family."

"I know." Jungkook finally lets go of Seokjin, 'I love you, hyung."

"I love you, too, Kook." Jin pats his cheek fondly, "Be happy, okay? I'll see you soon."

Ten minutes later, Seokjin's car is speeding away, and Jungkook is pouting.

"I miss Seokjin hyung."

Taehyung smiles, "Yeah, Seokjin hyung is everyone's favorite hyung, to be honest."

Yoongi clears his throat, and Jungkook laughs, happy and free.

"Yoongi hyung-nim, you know I love you the most."

"This is going to kill me." Namjoon says, "So how about we just call the cab now? What time is your train, guys?" he nods at Taehyung, Jungkook and Yoongi.

"Two hours." Yoongi replies, "I guess we should get going too, huh?"

"Yeah." Jimin looks at Jungkook a little sadly, "I wish you would come home, Kook."

"I will, next month." Jungkook promises.

"Do your parents know you'll be in Daegu?"

"I tried calling, they didn't answer, so I texted them." Jungkook coughs awkwardly, "They've read it, so... I guess that's all I can do. I told Junghyun hyung, though."

Yoongi slips and arms around Jungkook's waist, nipping his ear a little.

Jungkook fights him off, blushing furiously, and still somehow snuggling closer.

"Guys." Taehyung groans, "Seriously, I will kill you if you make us miss our train."

"The three of you will leave tomorrow, right?" Yoongi asks, and Hoseok, Jimin and Namjoon nod.

"I bet they won't be late for their train." Taehyung grumbles," Because none of them will be too busy making out to see the time."

Jungkook rolls his eyes.

"We're coming, hyung. Let's go"

***

"Jungkookie, my baby, I'm going to miss you so much!" Taehyung says into Jungkook's hair. They had reached the Daegu Station, and Taehyung's parents had come to pick him up. Yoongi had told his family not to bother- he and Jungkook would take a cab.

"For god's sake." Yoongi snaps, 'First of all, Kim Taehyung, he's my baby. Keep that in mind. And second, you literally live half an hour away from me. We can see each other all the time."

"But still." Jungkook whines, burying his head further into Taehyung's chest.

It takes Yoongi ten minutes to separate them, and then Jungkook gets to meet Taehyung's family. He seems to get along very well with them, and Yoongi is glad. They insist that he and Jungkook come over for dinner one of the days, and they agree happily.

By the time the Kims wave goodbye, Yoongi realizes he's forgotten to call the cab.

"It'll be here in ten minutes." he says, after hastily booking an uber.

Jungkook nods, taking Yoongi's hand, "Hyungnim?"

"Yes?"

"You were really hot when you got all annoyed at Tae for calling me his baby."

Yoongi smirks, slipping an arm around Jungkook's waist, "Well, you are my pretty baby, aren't you?"

Jungkook giggles, nodding.

Yoongi presses a kiss to his forehead, "Don't be nervous, okay, bun? I told you- my family are more excited to see you than to see me."

"I doubt that." Jungkook chuckles, but he leans in again, for another kiss.

Yoongi smiles fondly, "You're so cute."

"Shush."

Yoongi kisses him quickly, before intertwining their fingers, "Let's start walking towards the pick-up lane. This is the car number." he says, passing his phone to the younger boy, "Look out for it."

"Okay."

Eventually, the car pulls up, and Jungkook spots it with a quick eye. The two of them load their suitcases into the trunk and tell the driver their address, and then they're off. Yoongi (though he won't admit it) is excited at the idea of seeing his parents and his brother and his dog. He's eager to eat his mother's food and sleep in his old bed, and sit in his home studio. He has missed Daegu since last summer.

"You know, I came to Daegu last summer, and I thought about you the whole time." Yoongi speaks after a moment of silence. Jungkook looks at him, surprised.

"Really?"

"Yeah. When the six of us went to Tae's native village together- that's when I told them about you for the first time."

Jungkook smiles, "I spent my whole summer fighting with my parents last year. But I thought of you, too. Everytime I saw that picture in the camera roll-"

"-which? The stone on the lake?"

"Yeah, the one I took when we met. You asked me if you could see it, remember?" his voice sounds reminiscent, 'Everytime I see it, I think of you."

They're silent again, after that. Yoongi is still holding Jungkook's hand, and he notices that the boy looks a little nervous.

"Don't be nervous." Yoongi coos, stroking Jungkook's soft cheek, "They'll love you. Who wouldn't? Look at how sweet and cute you are, baby. I love you so much."

Jungkook turns so red that Yoongi is sure it's not even a real shade of the color. It's adorable and amusing at the same time, and Yoongi can't help but laugh.

"Stop laughing at me." Jungkook whines, "I can't help it- you're so sappy!"

"Only for you." Yoongi shrugs, "You can ask Seokjin hyung, I've never said these words before in my entire life."

"That better be the case." Jungkook grumbles.

Yoongi grins, "I might have spoken this way to Holly before."

"Holly- your dog?"

"Yes."

"Are you comparing me to your pet?"

"You're the two most precious things to me, so I'd say, yes I am." Yoongi smirks, "It's a compliment."

"Whatever." Jungkook rolls his eyes, "I love dogs, though. I told you about Guerem, right? He was shelter dog." he pouts, "People were so mean to him about looking a little battered. But he's the sweetest, most gentle, adorable dog in the entire universe. People are just stupid- Guerem can't help it that assholes used to beat him up and abuse him." his expression brightens, "Me and Junghyun hyung found him on our way home from school. Jihyun and Jimin helped us wash him up, and we took him to the vet and everything, and then Eomma said we could keep him."

Yoongi has seen pictures of Guerem- and he had indeed found the dog cute. The fact that Jungkook had probably found him in a much worse condition, and still chose to look past the appearance of the dog and look at the gentle nature instead, stirs something deep in Yoongi's heart.

"You're such an angel." Yoongi murmurs, "I'd like to see Guerem some day."

Jungkook's bright expression dulls suddenly. He seems to struggle with his thought for a moment.

"I forgot I won't be seeing him anymore."

Of course- the dog is in Busan, with Jungkook's parents. And it will be years before Jungkook sets foot into that house,

Yoongi tries to imagine leaving Daegu, his parnts refusing to take him back. Leaving the familiarity of his house and leaving Min Holly and his bhyung, and knowing that he had nowhere to return to once he left.

"Oh, baby." Yoongi says gently, as Jungkook swipes at his eyes, 'Come here."

Jungkook leans on Yoongi's shoulder, trying to steady his breathing, "I miss Busan, hyung. I miss Eomma and Appa and Junghyun and Guerem and-"

"I know." Yoongi whispers, "I'm so sorry you have to go through this."

They remain like that, and then, when Yoongi recognizes the landmark, realizes that in ten minutes, they will be home, he says, "We're almost there, bun. Listen to me for a second, look at me."

Jungkook does.

"It will be okay. Maybe it'll take years, but I promise you, I've spoken to Jimin, and he says your parents are reasonable enough to accept things eventually. I know it's hard now, but my baby is strong, right?"

Jungkook nods, managing a small smile.

"I'll be there for you through everything." Yoongi continues softly, "I'll love you forever. And I promise my family will take care of you. Smile for me- yeah, that's it. Such a beautiful smile."

"Hyung." Jungkook giggles, burying his face into the crook of Yoongi's neck, "I love you, too." he looks up shyly, "Thank you."

"Shh." Yoongi takes his hand and looks out the window, "Look at that- you see that shop? When I was younger....."

And they continue like that. In three minutes, Jungkook is laughing. In ten minutes, they are pulling up in front of a familiar house, and Yoongi is paying the driver while Jungkook removes their bags from the trunk. And then thrity seconds after hat, Yoongi rings the doorbell and waits for his family to open the door.

Notes:

RIP Jonghyun. You did well.
