Warmth

Summary:

There was a cat in his lap. A grey tabby that was content to curl up in his lap and endlessly purr as he kept his hands hovering, unsure of what to do. There were cats all over the small cafe in fact, even one rubbing itself against Katsuki while he kept his eyes on Shouto.

“You mentioned that you liked cats but never got to have one.” He trailed off, clearly embarrassed by his own thoughtfulness.

Work Text:

“Is this some kind of sex thing?” Shouto asked when his boyfriend and roommate presented him with a blindfold.

“What? No, you bastard!” Katsuki huffed while his ears and face turned an impressive shade of red, “And wipe that dumb smile off your face.”

“You like my dumb smile.” Shouto said, taking the blindfold from Katsuki, “Any chance you’ll tell me why I’m doing this?”

“Nope. Now put it on and shut up before I change my mind.”

As fun as it was to rile up his boyfriend, Shouto wanted to know what this was all about. Wordlessly, he put the blindfold on and reached out take Katsuki’s hand so he could have some sort of anchor in the darkness.

“C’mon. We’re going out.” Katsuki tugged his hand, keeping the other on his shoulder as a guide.

Shouto simply nodded and followed Katsuki’s lead and occasional verbal instructions. He trusted that he wouldn’t let him fall or run into anything.

It didn’t take too long for them to reach their assumed destination, the smell of coffee and pastries making his mouth water. Once Katsuki helped him into a seat Shouto reached for the blindfold only for his hand to smacked away.

“Just wait a bit. I’ll tell you when to take it off.”

Shouto merely sighed, it was clear Katsuki was trying some sort of romantic gesture so he wasn’t going to discourage that. The idea that his gruff boyfriend would go so far just to take him on a surprise date made him smile. They went on fewer dates now that they lived together, preferring to stay at home most of their time together, but it was sweet that Katsuki was making such an effort for a date.

He startled out of his thoughts when a sudden weight appeared on his lap and Katsuki’s hands removed the blindfold, knuckles brushing against the sides of his face gently.

“Thank you.” Shouto smiled, moving to pet the tabby that had settled in his lap. “I didn’t know places like this existed.”

“Well that’s not all.” Katsuki huffed, crossing his arms as he tried to fight the rising blush on his face. “All the cats here are adoptable and I already filled out the paperwork yesterday so all you need to do is pick one.”

There was a burst of giddiness that Shouto didn’t expect from himself, taking one of Katsuki’s hands and intertwining their fingers. “I love you.”

“I love you too you nerd.” Shouto wished he could treasure the smile Katsuki had forever but opted to smile back and squeeze his hand.

“Are there any cats here you like? We should choose together.”

“God, you’re such a sap.” Katsuki rolled his eyes but it was undermined by the smile he had, “Yeah, there’s a few that I’ll introduce you to.”

After the two finished their drinks and pastries they moved to a different section of the cafe where most of the cats were either sleeping or playing. Katsuki knelt down, coaxing one of the cats over before picking them up. “This one is my favorite. She’s pretty calm.”

Upon seeing her, Shouto had to suppress a laugh. It was almost like looking at a cat version of himself. “Oh? Is she?”

“Shut up you bastard! It was a coincidence.” Katsuki defended, while the cat in his arms purred and headbutted his chin.

“She obviously likes you. It’d be cruel to separate you two.” Shouto teased, scratching beneath her chin gently.

“Clearly she’s your child since you two have matching eyes.”

“And you’re sure this is just a coincidence?”

“Shut up.” Katsuki said, putting the cat on him before walking to the counter.

“I guess you’ll be coming home with us then.” Shouto mumbled to himself while the cat purred in his arms.

The cat only mewed at him in response, choosing to rub her head against Shouto’s neck while she purred loudly. She seemed to be cuddling up to his left side specifically along with a couple other cats choosing to brush against his left leg.

Katsuki only snorted when he came back to Shouto with the proper paperwork, “Who knew you were a cat magnet.”

“They just like that I’m warm. I certainly don’t mind.”

“Well let’s get you home. I don’t like sharing my personal heater but I’ll make an exception for our cat.”

“Do you have any ideas for names?” Shouto asked as they prepared to leave.

“A few. We’ll decide together though.” Katsuki took his left hand, squeezing it gently, “Let’s go home.”

“Of course.”
