Work Text:

“Is there something you want Jean Pierre or are you just going to stand there all day with that smirk on your face?”

The words hold no malice as they pass through the smiling lips of Muhammad Avdol. One eyebrow cocked, Avdol stares at the man in front of him, his crooked smile and shining eyes as endearing as ever.

The flowers behind Polnareff’s back are poorly hidden, the long leaves reveal themselves at his sides and the telltale crinkling of the plastic wrap around them noisily rustles everytime he shifts from foot to foot nervously.

“Well, I was just thinking it might be nice to do something romantic ya’ know.” Polnareff somehow smiles wider, “Since its like, an anniversary or something I guess.”

Avdol laughs, “I’m decently sure our anniversary is in June.”

“What?” Polnareff shakes his head, “No, not that one!”, he smiles, ”Although being my partner must be quite the privilege, hm?”

“I seem to be one of the few people that can actually put up with you.”  Avdol grins back, “But get on with your point.”

Polnareff makes a grand reveal of the flowers behind his back, his body giving a large bow and sweeping hand in all, “It just so happens to be the anniversary of the first day I met you!” He takes a moment, “Or er, I’m pretty sure it is, things got a little fuzzy there for a bit.”

Avdol takes the flowers in hand smiling fondly- the orange chrysanthemums are a nice touch. He glances up from the flowers slightly, “So we are celebrating the day I defeated you?”

“Defeated is a strong word.” Polnareff pouts and waves his hand, “More like knocked out temporarily ‘cause I was under DIO’s thingy or whatever.”

“So the day I defeated you.” He scoffs.

Polnareff points, “Listen asshole, do you know how expensive flowers are these days?! Are you grateful or what?!”

Avdol places his hand on the side of Polnareff’s face lovingly and sighs, “Of course I’m grateful Jean. I am just teasing you.”

His hand brushes the side of Polnareff’s lip which has his previous attitude melting away completely. He steps forward towards the other man and rests his arms on Avdol’s shoulders, enjoying the feeling of closeness and the sound of the bouquet wrapper crinkling slightly between them. “I also got us nice dinner reservations. If you would be so kind as to join me that is.”

Avdol looks at him with a devious look in his eye, “And what do you suppose we should tell Jotaro while he accompanies the mission tonight all alone.”

“Ah, he’ll be fine.” Polnareff smiles, “He’s a strong guy. Punches real good.” He starts to rock from side to side, “Plus I’m pretty sure it’s gonna end up being another empty warehouse with no golden arrows, no evil stand users and no leads. He’ll be ok.”

“Fine, then you get to be the one that tells him.” Avdol smiles and pushes from him to search for a vase and some water to place his flowers in.

“See, I was hoping that was more up your alley!” Polnareff walks behind him, “Your always so good with people Avdol, and since I’m paying for dinner it’s only fair, ya’ know?”

Avdol just turns and gives him ‘the look’.

Polnareff backpedals, “Look, it’ll be fine! I’m sure he wants to go read about fish or something instead of looking for the arrows anyway. Even heroes need their breaks!”

Avdol continues to stare at him when he walks to the small sink and fills his vase with water. Polnareff breaks under his stare and gives his best puppy-dog eyes as a last resort, “Come on Avdol, you know that Jotaro doesn’t take me seriously! I’m sure if you talk to him with your wonderful, incredible words of infinite wisdom he’ll take the night off no sweat!”

The normal passerby wouldn’t be able to pick up on the fault in Avdol’s expression, but from the years of being together Polnareff recognizes it easily, and takes it as a sign that he’s already won.

“Pretty please?” He places his hands together, sporting the wide toothy smile he knows can break Avdol’s resolve for the final blow.

Avdol takes in a deep breath, placing the vase down and crossing his arms, “I… suppose I can see what I can do. I’ll talk to him.”

Polnareff grabs Avdol’s shoulders to bring him into a big hug, “See! I knew you would be the best man for the job!”

Avdol closes his eyes and sighs, “I already agreed to talk to him, you don’t have to flatter me anymore Jean.”

“Oh, but of course I do.” He talks into the crook of Avdol’s neck, “I get to do that now as much as I’d like and I’m going to abuse the hell out of that power.”

Avdol shifts his weight, breathing in the scent of Polnareff’s cologne he had bought him weeks before. “Is that so?”

“Yeah.” He laughs, “Red string of fate and all that, so you have to listen to all my sappy shit from now on.”

“Oh lord, I’m not sure we have that kind of time.” Avdol laughs.

“Too bad.” Polnareff kisses his neck quickly, “Now you’re forced to listen to how amazing you are.” Avdol can feel Polnareff breath in deeply, “Man, I don’t know what to do with you.”

Avdol swallows, he’s still not used to Polnareff wearing his heart on his sleeve, “You… do realize this is the anniversary of you nearly burning to death, right?”

Polnareff just holds him tighter and laughs into his neck, “You’re such an asshole. Just let me gush about how much I love you already.”

Avdol just hums in appreciation and messes with the Polnareff’s earrings as he speaks, “Oh, I apologize. Please go on.”

“Too bad, the moments over.” He pecks Avdol quickly on the lips, “Your just gonna have pry it out of me.”

Avdol rubs his back as he parts, “Shouldn’t be too difficult considering your track record.”

He just laughs heartily when he heads for the door, “Yeah, yeah whatever. Let me get the car and you can call Jotaro.”

Avdol groans slightly, “Sure.”

Polnareff pokes his head part into the hotel room one more time before heading out. Looking at Avdol, he feels a swelling in his chest of something warm he hadn’t really ever felt since before meeting the man and hopes never leaves him. “Hey Avdol?”, his voice creeps out.

“Hm?” Avdol looks up from the phone dial, his deep brown eyes capturing the light around them with Polnareff along it. In the times when he least expects it, Polnareff’s heart still will skip a beat as if he was some kind of teenager. How embarrassing.

His cheeks pull at their corners when he smiles wide and winks from the doorway, “I really love ya’.”
