Work Header

If Only.

Summary:

It was silent for a moment, then it wasn't. "Well, I don't know how to feel about the whole suicide thing but... I think you're good-looking, Dazai." Atsushi keeps his gaze settled on Dazai, smiling sweetly. "I think you'd be able to get a girl who'd be willing to commit a double suicide with you, for sure."

Work Text:

Another annual celebration in honor of the agency was ensuing that night. Dazai wasn't much of a partier, but he was a huge flirter. He was especially known for walking up to random women and asking if they'd like to do a double suicide with him, but usually, none of them agreed to such a ridiculous request.

And then, there was Atsushi. He wasn't all that fond of parties. Maybe Dazai didn't mind them, but Atsushi enjoyed his time alone at times. The drunkenness that usually surrounded him at the parties the agency threw was too much to handle, and he'd rather sit out than deal with a bunch of drunks.

It was the third party he was attending, and Dazai was also not too familiar with the parties either, being he used to be part of Port Mafia. But that was a long while ago, and things have bettered since then.

"Ey, Atsushi," Dazai walked over to Atsushi, who, unsurprisingly, was sitting alone on a couch in the corner of the room. "How's it going?" Asked the suicidal maniac, his lips curving slightly to smirk at the boy he was looking down at.

Atsushi didn't really bother to look back at Dazai, so he just lifted his hand and tilted it side to side, letting out a small sigh and a barely audible, "Meh."

Dazai took a seat next to Atsushi, chuckling a bit and taking a short sip of his drink afterwards. "Got that right," Dazai responded. He looked around the room and spotted Kunikida sitting alone, scribbling something in his notebook. Probably some unimportant nonsense, like what he looks for in a woman, or a note of something he was once told before.

"So, uhm... What are you doing here?" Atsushi switched his gaze from the partiers to Dazai instead, his eyes soon meeting Dazai's.

"Why am I here?" Dazai presses his fist to the bottom of his chin, almost as if he were in deep thought. "Eh, I just wanted to get away from some things. Besides, I still need someone to commit a double suicide with, but it seems no woman would ever do such a thing..."

Dazai sighed, letting his head fall back and sink slowly into the back of the couch. "What does a man like me have to do in order to make his suicidal dreams come true?"

Atsushi then realized what he had just admit sounded a lot more screwed up than how he truly meant it. "I-I mean," Atsushi looked down at the floor anxiously. "I'm not encouraging suicide or anything, but--"

"Hey, Atsushi?"

Atsushi sheepishly turned his head to face Dazai once again. "...Y-Yes?"

"Would you ever commit a double suicide with me?" Dazai continued to stare blankly up at the ceiling.

A double suicide? With Dazai? The idea seemed sort of sketchy, mainly because Dazai only asked that type of question to any woman he was flirting with at the moment, but... Atsushi wasn't exactly a woman, and he definitely didn't understand why Dazai would suddenly ask him a question like that, especially that out of the blue.

But, still, Atsushi had no idea how to respond.

"Uhh... I'm not sure...?" Atsushi hoped that was enough for Dazai to back off on the question.

"What's your reasoning?"

And... He didn't. Instead, Dazai sat up straight and turned slightly to face Atsushi, interested in what his next answer would be.

"I don't really have any explanation--"

"Then, what would you be willing to do with me?"

Atsushi felt a bit pressured at this point. Well, he didn't mind it much, since it was coming from Dazai, but it was nerve-wracking nonetheless.

"I don't know how to answer that either, Dazai..."

That was a bit of a lie. Atsushi actually did know. Atsushi, in fact, had developed some feelings for Dazai, but they weren't anything serious... At least not yet.

"Come on, Atsushi-kun..."
Dazai slid closer to his awkward friend, leaning in even closer to try and grasp a firm answer from the boy. He took another sip of his drink, this time longer than the last.

Atsushi's mind was scrambled all of the sudden, and he stayed frozen in place on the couch. A slight blush made its way to his cheeks, and he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"A-Ah, uhm... Well, I--"

"Let's see... Would you be willing to..."

Atsushi gulped.

A few seconds later, Dazai's free hand had found its way to Atsushi's, and soon, their fingers intertwined.

"... Let me hold your hand?"

Oh, boy.

"I-I guess that's..." Atsushi stuttered, "I g-guess that's not a b-bad thing..."

"And maybe I can..."

Atsushi gulped a second time, this time, his throat incredibly dry all of the sudden.

And a few seconds later, Dazai's lips were on Atsushi's neck, leaving soft, gentle pecks that trailed up to the side of his face.

"Kiss you, a bit?"

Atsushi was really worked up, now... His face was burning, sweat already dripping from his forehead.

"Dazai, please--"

Dazai brought his hand up to Atsushi's chin, pushing his head up a bit to level with his own.

"Maybe, one more kiss..."

Atsushi's breath hitched. Oh, God. Dazai was actually making a move on him... This wasn't like anything Atsushi had ever experienced before.

Dazai leaned in, his lips only centimeters away from Atsushi's own.

Atsushi closed his eyes, and as inexperienced as he was, he was about to try his best to kiss his partner...

But he realized nothing was really happening.

"I'm just messing with you."

Atsushi opened his eyes to see Dazai wearing a crooked smile, trying his best to contain his laughter.

"Don't you remember, Atsushi?" Dazai stood up with his drink in his hand, turning to face Atsushi once again. "Maybe you've forgotten, but... I have no such tastes in men..."

"... Yet."

And with that, Dazai walked back to the others, who were socializing and minding their own business.

Atsushi sat alone once again, feeling like a complete fool.

"Dammit."
