The Monster That Is Love

Summary:

Yet another poem about love.

Notes:

This assignment was to write a poem of 5-20 lines about a topic that could be a monster to teens. As a hopeless romantic, I of course chose love.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

First love is beautiful.

First love is unforgettable.

First love can make you cry tears of joy.

First love can make you sob until the exhaustion puts you to sleep.

Young love is strong.

Young love is volatile.

Young love can shatter its spell in moments.

Young love can destroy days, weeks, months, and even years of your life.

First heartbreak is painful.

First heartbreak is nightmarish.

First heartbreak can teach you life lessons.

First heartbreak can break your heart and mind and soul in ways you never imagined.

One-sided love is empty.

Unconditional love is full.

One-sided love can be damaging.

Unconditional love can protect you from dangers you never knew you were facing.

Love is Aphrodite,

In all her beauty and splendor.

Love is Cupid,

In all his ugliness and grandeur.

Love is a force.

One capable of mending what is broken.

Love is a monster.

One capable of destroying what is perfectly sturdy.

Children see love as the endgame to life.

We surround them with this outlandish ideal

Of love at first sight and until death.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy for a reason.

Love is one of the greatest evils

That any teenager can face.

To them I say:

Be careful young ones, and guard your hearts.
